Just a basic conceptual thought, and interested to see if anyone else sees this as viable. The US and it’s states codify a new tax system as follows, with all percentages set by law as not to ever exceed or increase, and all other loopholes eliminated. 1. All taxes are abolished 2. A flat sales tax of 10% 3. The federal government gets 3% 4. The state government gets 7% to distribute as determined by local legislators Currently: You buy your home and pay a sales tax at the time of purchase. Then a property tax every year afterwards. Proposal: You buy your home and pay a sales tax at the time of purchase. Nothing more. This would dramatically reduce the size of the IRS, establish a level playing field, allow citizens to enjoy the financial fruits of their labors, and collect revenue from those who are putting additional burdens on our infrastructure (i.e., tourists and illegals).

Two cities in Colorado have agreed to add questions in the fall ballots about whether to extend sales taxes to aid transportation work. Colorado Springs will ask voters on the Nov. 5 ballot whether to extend collection of the 0.57% sales tax for another 10 years, an additional revenue estimated to amount to $50M annually that will be used for roads and bridge work. Glenwood Springs wants to continue and double a sales tax. The current sales tax amounts to half of a cent and has a December 2026 sunset date. The question on the ballot will extend the duration of the tax collection by 20 years and increase it to a full cent, raising the estimated annual revenue to $7.6M.
