𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: English is not essential for finance roles. 🗣 Reality: A myth persists that candidates only need to be fluent in the local Nordic language, but in reality, proficiency in English is often a requirement for finance roles to facilitate communication with international partners and clients. Many multinational companies in the Nordics operate in English. 2. 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: Finance roles in the Nordics are concentrated only in capital cities. 🌍 Reality: While major cities like Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, and Helsinki are financial hubs, opportunities exist throughout the region and there are plenty of roles in smaller cities. 3. 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: Qualifications and a background in traditional finance education are the sole focus of recruitment. 🎓 Reality: While a finance-related degree and qualifications are valuable, companies in the Nordics are open to hiring candidates with diverse educational backgrounds and tend to emphasize skills, experience, and cultural fit. Practical experience, certifications, and a proactive attitude can be equally or even more crucial in the recruitment process. 4. 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: Senior finance roles are exclusively filled through internal promotions. 🔄 Reality: While internal promotions are common, companies in the Nordics often seek external expertise for senior finance positions. EMEA Recruitment actively identify and present seasoned professionals from diverse backgrounds, challenging the misconception that top-level finance roles are always filled internally. 5. Juniors out there....strategically, it is in your best interest to go local. Look in your backyard for non-remote roles. You have a higher probability of landing something. Earn your keep, and after a couple of years, you can find a company that allows you to work remotely. Some companies do not want to hire junior engineers for remote roles, as it's much easier and more productive to do hands on training in person. It's not asynchronous. Food for thought. We're looking for a new Finance Manager #hiring. If you don't know International Workplace, we're a digital learning provider specialising in health, safety and wellbeing at work. Founded in 1995, we're an innovative, entrepreneurial small business, with ambitious plans for growth. As someone posted yesterday (thanks JP) - and as you can see from this photo of me - every day's a learning day at International Workplace, for our clients, our learners and for us too. Looking through the applications we received yesterday, it struck me how many applicants only talk about the technical aspects of accountancy and financial control. Of course, they're vitally important. Figures have to be accurate. Books have to balance. What's also vitally important in an SME however - particularly in a standalone role like this one - is the ability to interpret that technical information. And to use it to tell a story, and to influence people's behaviour. There's a tendency to rely on tools to do this (AI, data visualistion, analytics, and so on). I'm not saying they can't help. But what I'm talking about are inherently human skills and behaviours. Can you see what's *really* going on? Can you persuade someone to do things differently? If you're based in the East of England (it's a hybrid-remote role, but our roots are in Cambridge) and you want to play an exciting part in our journey, we'd love to hear from you.
