About us

UN-OHRLLS was established in 2001 and today serves 91 vulnerable Member States of the United Nations. The 46 Least Developed Countries (LDCs), 32 Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and 38 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are facing their own unique sets of challenges in achieving sustainable development and internationally agreed goals. At UN-OHRLLS, we mobilize international support and advocate in favour of the three vulnerable country groups. We raise awareness about the economic, social and environmental potential that exists in these countries and ensure that the pressing needs of the 1.1 billion people who live in them, remain high on the international agenda. UN-OHRLLS is headed by High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, Ms. Rabab Fatima.

Last week, our Under-Secretary-General and High Representative Rabab Fatima attended the International High-Level Forum on Landlocked Developing Countries on Food Security and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) organised jointly by the Government of Uzbekistan and FAO on 5 to 6 September in Tashkent. The Forum gathered key actors in LLDCs and supporting international institutions to share experiences, discuss common challenges and explore collaborative solutions and partnerships. The Forum ended with strong optimism for achieving SDG2 in LLDCs and UN-OHRLLS is grateful for the immense support for LLDCs as we get closer to LLDC3 in Gaborone which will be a once-in-a-decade opportunity for LLDCs to explore solutions to their unique challenges, and forge partnerships to unlock their full potential. Heads of Government and State, together with leaders from civil society, the private sector, youth, and other partners, will agree on a new programme of action to transform the livelihoods of over half a billion people living in landlocked developing countries globally. In addition to ten plenary sessions, the official programme will be accompanied by several pre-conference events, five thematic roundtables, and special forums focusing on different stakeholders. Our Under-Secretary-General and High Representative, Rabab Fatima, joined UN Secretary-General António Guterres on a mission to the Pacific Islands. They visited Samoa, Tonga, Timor-Leste, and New Zealand, bringing the spotlight to the immense challenges and the resilience of Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS). USG Fatima praised the Pacific leadership, and the steadfastness that the Islands, and all SIDS, have shown in the fight for climate justice and urgent climate action. Witnessing firsthand the harsh realities of climate change and its devastating impact on small island states was a poignant reminder of the urgency of our collective action. This visit underscored the UN's solidarity with the Pacific Islands and all SIDS. As the office mandated with advocating for special country groups, including SIDS, UN-OHRLLS remains dedicated to supporting Pacific SIDS in achieving the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, advancing the SDGs, and implementing the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS).
