The WAR in UKRAINE is having a great toll on oil & gas offshore helicopters services and probably other chopper services. Parts meant for servicing our choppers are sent to Ukraine and it means choppers can be serviced duly on schedule due to lack of service / spare parts which leads to flight delays as all flights must be serviced & check before departing offshore for each flight itinerary.. Major Helicopters services are affected and some 1st flight leave the rig / platform by 4pm while 2nd flight leave as late as 8pm / 9pm at night causing major risk hazard due to reduced vision. #NOTE: These are the days to take your BOSIET training very serious. BOSIET, EBS, CA-EBS, SAS If you work in a country where profit is prioritized over maintenance ... and the flight operators push to keep up with flight schedules rather than putting safety first. Maintenance and Adjustment of Magnetic Compass The presence of a magnetic compass onboard is a requirement under SOLAS Reg. V/19. It falls within the scope of a vessel’s safety certificate survey and is examined during Port State Control inspections. A key requirement is that the ship’s crew must have access to a magnetic compass that provides a steady heading reference, and they should be aware of any deviation on any heading. In a recent Marine Notice, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) highlighted the importance of the magnetic compass as a critical tool for safe navigation. AMSA reminded shipowners and Masters of their responsibility to ensure that these compasses are maintained in good working order at all times. Failure to do so or to monitor deviations may lead to delays or detentions of the vessel, with potential prosecution for the vessel owner and/or Master. For further details and recommendations, see AMSA’s Marine Notice 19/2016 from November 2016. While today’s seafarers may view the magnetic compass as excessive navigational equipment, it is essential to emphasize that its presence is mandated by SOLAS Reg. V/19. Moreover, it is the only navigational directional device onboard that does not rely on external power or inputs. Members and clients are advised to heed AMSA's warning and ensure that Masters and crew are aware of their responsibilities under international regulations to regularly monitor the performance of magnetic compasses, make necessary adjustments, and record deviations in a compass deviation book. Although the SOLAS Regulations do not specify intervals for successive adjustments of magnetic compasses, deviations should be determined at least once every watch while the vessel is at sea. Additionally, adjustments should be made shortly after any major alteration of course, in accordance with the principles and guidance on watchkeeping outlined in section A-VIII/2 of the STCW Code (Regulation 34.2). Operators must have procedures in place to ensure ships are maintained, with inspections undertaken at appropriate intervals. The manufacturers’ guidelines will help identify some of these intervals. 🛠 Effective planned maintenance can identify problems early and provides an opportunity to fix them, before they potentially become far more expensive or dangerous. 📅 Plan for it: avoid a breakdown.
