The force of a train hitting your car equals the force of your car crushing a soda can. A typical freight train can take more than a mile to stop, even when emergency brakes are applied. It's important that families know the meanings of common signage found near railroad crossings. Does your family know these four common signs and signals they might encounter near railroad crossings? Violation of the week: Truck on Prohibited Roadway The video below shows a typical 2-lane road here in OK. For whatever reason, this week i had a lot of similar cases (okay, only 3) where folks were getting tickets being on roads with 5 ton limits. You can imagine the excuses. GPS + no signage. For one of them, the signage was far enough down the road you couldn't see it until it was too late. For the other two, guilty as sin. There's not really a point to this post, or some grand lesson learned or cheesy motto to promote. Just noticing the coincidental timing is all. The advice is the same on all of them: pre-trip better, if possible, to confirm valid route running. Especially in rural America. Thanks to News On 6 for the reporting. #cdldrivers #truckingindustry #roadsafety https://lnkd.in/gFHK5w_i

Smoother sailing for commuters and trucks on I-95 in Norwalk CT after the highway was reopened after a crash and fire involving a tanker truck of gasoline and two other vehicles this past Thursday morning. According to police reports after the crash, the driver of a Camaro was changing lanes and hit the front of the tanker truck which then ran into another tractor-trailer and burst into flames underneath an overpass (https://lnkd.in/gpBu-vhc). The resulting fire damaged the bridge and pavement and the highway was shut down for days as construction crews dismantled and removed the bridge and repaired the pavement. One direction of traffic was opened on Saturday and the entire roadway was opened yesterday morning. "It is truly amazing that in less than 80 hours from that fiery crash Thursday that shut down traffic in both directions, the highway again is fully open," Governor Ned Lamont said in a statement. I'm not an engineer but that sentiment seems appropriate. This is the second recent tanker truck fire on I-95, another crash and fire damaged the highway in Philadelphia last summer, and the highway was repaired and reopened in little more than two weeks. The state reports AADT of about 150,000 vehicles in the town just 14 miles northeast of the CT-NY state line. Good news that no one was hurt in the crash, but we all could learn a valuable lesson about being more careful driving on crowded roads at high speeds. #highways #construction #hazmat #trafficsafety

In my earlier post, I highlighted the common misuse of hazard lights to indicate going straight at a junction. Using hazard lights in the rain is another common mistake drivers make. While it might seem like a good way to increase visibility, it can confuse other drivers about your intentions. Hazard lights should not be used while driving unless you are in an emergency situation such as when your vehicle is disabled or broken down. Using a hazard light means to signal other drivers that your vehicle is not moving. Let's all strive to use hazard lights correctly and improve road safety.
