✈️ Another Fantastic Fantasy Wings Session with Captain Calvin Gordon ✈️
I had the privilege of attending the fourth Fantasy Wings session on Saturday, and it was yet another insightful one, learning about the steps to become a pilot. Calvin Gordon, an A320 Captain, shared invaluable insights highlighting the importance of pilot competencies throughout the session.
During the session, we had a group task where we explored and discussed the key responsibilities of a Captain during take-off, cruise, and landing. Underlining the significance of skills such as teamwork throughout these stages, as the skill is not limited to the pilots in the cabin but reiterated through communication with ground crew, cabin crew, ATC, and possibly emergency crews in the event of an emergency.
We then went on to explore the different job roles available for commercial pilots, with Calvin sharing his experience of working for NHS Cargo amidst the peak of the pandemic. This was something new I hadn’t heard of before – working as a contract pilot, which provides pilots with more flexibility regarding their schedules, offering space to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
I found this information particularly helpful, especially considering recent reports of the FAA investigating pilots who have concealed their mental health out of fear of losing their medical certificates and, essentially, their jobs (I’ll link the article below). Providing invaluable insights into how we can discover various pilot jobs to suit our lifestyle and maintain our health positively.
A really engaging session, and I am once again grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a knowledgeable community. Looking forward to the next Fantasy Wings session! ✈️
