Here’s what they don’t tell you about starting a placement year ❌ Today marks one month as a Marketing Intern at LOOKFANTASTIC.COM Before starting, I was repeatedly told these 3 things: - It’s fast-paced - You’ll be given responsibilities from day 1 - ‘There’s no such thing as a silly question’ While all these things are true, here are some things I wasn’t told before (but have come as a very nice bonus): 💄I’ll attend immersive brand visits from big beauty brands, including Isle of Paradise, Glow Hub and Kylie Cosmetics. 📦 I’ll meet teams across the business from manufacturing to employer branding to understand the wider picture. 📱 I’ll make some fun cameo appearances on LOOKFANTASTIC’s Instagram. 📖 I’ll steadily transform into a walking thesaurus and dictionary (I work on the content team to clarify). 🙋🏼♀️ I’ll become friends with 9 other lovely interns, making the move to Manchester a lot less scary. 🗣️ I’ll be given access to free professional development coaching and L&D workshops. 🎄 I’ll be getting involved in Christmas projects before August even finishes. The point being, you won’t know what to expect until you start your placement. The key is to get stuck in, make the most of opportunities and take each day as it comes. I’m loving my time here so far and can already see the benefits of undertaking a year in industry.

My first marketing job was back in LA in 2010. I interned for a cool product placement agency a few minutes from my house. Yes, we worked with major studios and put on big brand events, but here’s what I remember most: - 🎬 Scouring books & scripts, looking for placement opportunities (“Hey Robin - have you heard of The Hunger Games? Not sure, but it seems like it might go somewhere…”). - 🎮 Trying to figure out what a virtual good was and how anyone could actually charge, let alone MAKE, real money on a branded item in a video game. #nftbeforenft - ❤️ The kindness and mentorship from Devery Holmes and the entire team at Spark Alliance Marketing. I was young, naive, and had no idea what it took to be a good marketer, let alone a real working “adult.” I’ll never forget sitting down at my manager’s gigantic corner desk, pondering what my future could hold. She didn’t ask me what I had learned in school or to solve a case study. She asked what I liked to do and what kind of life I wanted to lead. Between fielding fire drill phone calls and questions from major film studios, Devery took the time to to tell me about her family. She shared the triumphs and hardships of being the president of her own company, and how she balanced work with making time for her community and passions. Each day she showed me how to truly support a team (even the teeny college intern), build an inclusive environment, and get good work done. I had no idea then, but this would become the foundation for my leadership style. It’s been almost 15 years, but those lessons are still fresh in my mind. I’m eternally grateful to have had such an exemplary leader to look up to, and hope that I have brought even a smidge of that magic to my teams and advisory companies across the country. The news on the latest Pedestrian Group licensed brand staff cuts has been the most resonating of all the cuts and the challenging environment we've been experiencing for the past year in Australia. It truly reflects the shrinking coverage of key technology and culture verticals for the up-and-coming Gen Z and Alpha generations. It doesn't help that they increasingly trust social media platforms for news & editorial coverage. Still, as an SEO & publisher, it's truly an underappreciated practice for advertisers to realise a value exchange for some parts of journalism to remain a viable business model and not 100% shortcuts through tech platforms. As I've mentioned time and time again, our clients and those we observe in the industry are always examples of how we can do better for our publication to be better for others ultimately. As an employer, I can also attest that running a pub business has been challenging in the past financial year. Still, the least I/we can do is to help find other doors that can lead to opportunities for those who can't currently work together because good karma does come around when you least expect it.
