The medals of the next Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 have been unveiled! Whether they are gold, silver or bronze, they will all contain a very special piece of metal that was once part of the Eiffel Tower. Cut into a hexagon, the geometric shape evokes France to the point of becoming its nickname. Also on the same side, thin lines are projected at irregular intervals all around the iron hexagon. Struck rather than engraved, these rays bring relief and shine to a medal that is far from smooth. More information here https://lnkd.in/eRZn98tR Following this announcement, let’s have a look at the medals of the previous editions, thanks to our OSC Reference Document on Olympic Summer Games medals. Available on the Olympic World Library here https://lnkd.in/eRaBMEbv, you will discover each medal, illustrated by a photo of its obverse and reverse, and with a description of the design and the technical details. Paris 2024: The incredible story behind the Olympic and Paralympic medals The athletes who will compete at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 now have an extra motivation to reach the podium: in addition to bringing home a gold, silver or bronze medal, they will also take a small piece of Paris with them, materialised by a section of the Eiffel Tower integrated in each one. It all began with a rather special brief. Bring creativity and poignancy to a classic yet essential object symbolising the Olympic and Paralympic Games. But how can the medal be even more special? Is it possible to go beyond the traditional with something as classic and long-established as the medals? The answer: yes. By including a piece of France inside – literally. Chaumet, the French jewellery house, used its world-recognised expertise to take the concept to another level in order to magnify the idea, make it shine and give life to something that could have been ridiculous, but turned out to be quite special. This time, the designers didn’t have to deal with a timeless diamond or a ruby, but a material that had aged. They decided to think of it and work with it: the Eiffel Tower, at the centre of an exceptional jewel. Each medal made for Paris 2024, revealed on Thursday 8 February, has an original piece of the Eiffel Tower in it, and it comes with a supporting certificate of authenticity.

Paris 2024 Paralympic Medals vs Olympic Medals🏅 What’s the difference between the Olympic and the Paralympic games medals? While the front sides are similar: • Both were designed by Chaumet and minted by Monnaie de Paris. • The middle has a piece of the Eiffel Tower cut into a hexagon, the geometric shape of France. The Paralympic medal’s reverse side differs from the Olympic version: • The traditional symbols of the goddess of victory, Athena and the Acropolis are replaced by the Eiffel Tower. • The design shows a low-angle view of the Tower’s base. • The words “Paris” and “2024” frame the Tower’s pillars. • These words are inscribed in Braille, symbolizing accessibility and honoring Louis Braille, the French inventor of the writing system. . Visually impaired athletes can distinguish the medals by touch - lines are engraved on the medal’s edge: I for gold, II for silver and III for bronze. Why the difference of imagery for the reverse side? (Athena vs base of the Eiffel tower) I’m not sure. What do you think? Which design do you prefer? Reference: https://lnkd.in/eah67BXN

During the Paris Paralympics, have you seen the white NPA flag go up often and wonder which nation does it represent & which anthem plays when someone from that team wins gold? 👉 NPA stands for 'Neutral Paralympic Athletes' and is used to represent individual athletes from Russia & Belarus, after the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) banned the two nation's participation in the Paralympics given the ongoing war 👉 The IPC vets the athletes and only those who have no involvement or affiliation with the war and military are allowed to participate 👉 In Paris, there are 96 participants from Team NPA across 5 sports, majority of them from para-athletics and swimming. 👉 When someone from NPA wins gold, which has happened about 22 times thus far, the Paralympic anthem is played but their medal wins are not officially recorded on the medals table 👉 Similar team structures have been created in the past for representatives from Yugoslavia (1992), East Timor (2000) and refugees & asylees (2016) before an official Refugee Paralympic Team has been created from the 2020 Tokyo Games.

No final decision yet on Russian athletes’ participation in Paralympics — official President of Russia's Paralympic Committee Pavel Rozhkov said that RPC will make it later after a thorough consideration MOSCOW/ Russia’s Paralympic Committee (RPC) has not yet made a final decision on Russian athletes’ participation in the 2024 Paris Games, RPC President Pavel Rozhkov told TASS. Earlier on Wednesday, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) published criteria, which allow Russian Paralympians to compete as individuals under a white flag featuring black lettering spelling out NPA. They are barred from taking part in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Paralympic Games. The IPC also ruled that they were allowed to compete beyond the medal table. The national flags of Russia and Belarus, as well as other national symbols, are banned at the Paralympic Games. Those athletes who support a special military operation or have an ongoing national security contract will not be allowed to take part. "The final decision on our participation in the Games has not been made yet. We will make it later after a thorough consideration," said Rozhkov. "We are studying the criteria, which we received today, along with our federations and our national teams. However, even now we can state that they are discriminatory and still retain the previous well-known humiliating features. And we understand from the experience with the IOC (International Olympic Committee - TASS) and the IPC, as well as from all the previous steps of these organizations, that more criteria may appear.". #business #finance #financialservices

🏅 Let’s talk about the difference in the number of medals awarded per day between the Olympic and Paralympic Games. By Day 5 of the Olympics, the top 3 countries—USA, China, and France—had accumulated 75 medals. But by Day 5 of the Paralympics, China alone had already surpassed 80 medals. This sharp difference is due to the numerous categories within the same event at the Paralympics, resulting in a higher distribution of medals. 🌍 The leading countries in the Olympics—China, USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Australia, and the Netherlands—remain dominant in the Paralympics as well. However, two surprising entries shake up the top 10: Brazil and Ukraine, sitting in 4th and 5th place, have seemingly swapped places with Japan and South Korea, who are now out of the top 10. 🔍 In the coming days, I’ll explore whether these countries also had strong performances in previous Paralympics and whether there’s a discernible trend in the strengths and weaknesses of countries across both the Olympic and Paralympic rankings.
