According to recent research from the Pew Research Center, 53% of Americans familiar with GLP-1s think they are a good option to lose weight for people with obesity or a weight-related condition. But in contrast, only 16% think they’ll do a great deal or quite a bit to reduce U.S. obesity overall. That leaves us wondering 🤔 How can we make a bigger impact on those that take GLP-1s so it has a larger effect on obesity prevalence? While we don’t prescribe GLP-1s, we’ve thought long and hard about how to help members not only while they take the medications, but also if/when they decide to stop taking them. Did you know that obesity rates have been increasing since the 1980s? It's clear we need to change how we talk about and treat obesity. In Omada's latest whitepaper, we focus on the need to reframe obesity as a complex chronic condition that requires long-term, often lifelong treatment. This is especially true in the age of GLP-1s. Just read some fascinating research from the Pew Research Center - while over half of Americans who are familiar with GLP-1s acknowledge their benefit for weight loss in individuals with obesity or weight-related conditions, only 16% believe they'll greatly reduce overall U.S. obesity rates. It got me thinking 🤔 about the role we can play in amplifying the impact of GLP-1s to tackle obesity more broadly. At Omada Health, we don't prescribe GLP-1s, but we're committed to supporting our members in every step of their weight health journey, including weight maintenance after medication. Obesity is a complex trait in the truest sense. The heterogeneity behind this trait at an individual level and the breadth of associations with it encourage an abandoning of simplified searches for mechanisms of obesity. In place of this, we would encourage a more fluid consideration of mechanisms associated with obesity if we are to make best use of the tools available now and in the future.

A well intentioned ad or website image may, in fact project a weight bias or fat shaming and remains an issue in the health care and fitness industry. Take the time to think over the images you select and ask yourself is this encouraging or meant to embarrass. As a former program and marketing director for Robert Marvin Bariatric surgeon, the training and material from the Obesity Action Coalition is incredibly impactful to understand that difference between bias and being helpful. Sometimes we mean well, but that’s not enough in health related marketing. Plus, as once an obese person turned Ironman, I know weight struggles all too well. Be encouraging in your visual voice. Positivity over shameful moments wins every time. #healthcaremarketing #responsiblemarketing #positivereinforcement #obesityactioncoalition #healthcareadvertising
The OAC strives to reduce the weight bias associated with obesity. We know that when it comes to fighting weight bias, every voice counts. Our words and actions matter. Our weight shouldn’t dictate the way we are treated. We must continue to stop weight bias, including at the provider level. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gSHGb4MY
