In 2023 Uisce Éireann eliminated discharges of raw sewage from ten towns & villages by connecting them to treatment plants (see image of the areas below). Nineteen areas continue to discharge raw sewage from the equivalent of approximately 47,000 residents into the environment every day. Based on Uisce Éireann’s latest plans, nine of these areas will be connected to treatment plants by the end of 2025 and the remaining areas are expected to receive treatment between 2027 and 2030. Uisce Éireann must carry out all the work needed to resolve these raw sewage discharges without delay. From wastewater treatment in purification plants: 👉 Clear water is obtained for reintroduction into rivers, which naturally have purifying capabilities due to the presence of oxygen. 👉 Solid substance, known as sludge, is produced. To dehydrate it, further treatments are applied: drying or incineration. ✅ Drying is used for nutrient-rich sludge. Through a controlled process below 200°C, it reduces the sludge volume by half by eliminating water. ✅ Incineration, performed above 1000°C, generates inert powders. This process maximizes landfill space by storing harmless substances in the soil.
