World AIDS Day 2023 - Let Communities Lead! Do you know that in 2022 about 39 million worldwide were living with HIV? Nearly 1.3 million people acquired HIV in 2022. Even though HIV/AIDS is a severe condition, it is preventable and treatable. Stigma and discrimination are major obstacles to AIDS testing, prevention, and treatment. So every one of us must work together to create a world where AIDS patients are treated with respect and compassion. Each year on December 1st, World AIDS Day, the Office of Health Policy and AIDS Funding hosts a Wreath Laying Ceremony in Washington Square Park at the site of the HIV/AIDS monument. Since the beginning of the epidemic in the early 1980s, more than 1.2 million people have been diagnosed with AIDS, and 1 in 8 people in the U.S. are living with HIV and are unaware of their status. HIV affects us all and the virus is non-discriminatory. To reduce stigma, it is vital to address the misconceptions surrounding HIV by recognizing that it is a preventable, treatable, and manageable disease, rather than a death sentence. World AIDS Day is held globally every year on December 1st. It is a day to honour those that have died from AIDS-related illnesses around the world but also to show support for people living with HIV and to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS within our community. 🌍❤️ #EndTheStigma #WorldAIDSDay #WAD2023 Although HIV diagnoses remain low in NSW for our mob, we are still being diagnosed with gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis, which can lead to increased risk of infertility, long-term reproductive issues, and further spread of sexually transmitted infections in our communities. This pinpoints the need for better prevention strategies, including screening. HIV remains a major global public health issue, having claimed 40.4 million (32.9–51.3 million) lives so far with ongoing transmission in all countries globally. On World AIDS Day 2023 we should remember to “Let communities lead.”  We need to support and empower communities to take on leadership roles, rather than just celebrating the accomplishments of individual communities. Since 2007, HPPI has supported vulnerable and high-risk populations to achieve control of HIV and AIDS. The HIV/AIDS interventions of HPPI have demonstrated a gross reduction of new HIV infections in recent years. 16,190 people were tested for HIV through HPPI’s interventions in this year. #WorldAIDSDay #AIDSDAY #WorldAIDSDAY2023 #AIDS

Gone are the days of round-the-clock pill regimens, with improvements in prevention and treatment meaning that people living with HIV can now live as long as everyone else. The 38% reduction in new HIV diagnoses since 2010 can be put down, in part, to the medical community’s continued commitment to innovation. But with current approaches still struggling to reach those disproportionately affected by HIV – including low-income individuals and women – the relentless push for a breakthrough remains vital.
