We kick off 2024 with a new issue of Insider. Now on email to all clients, Issue 5 continues our partnership with the food team at KERB Food led by Charlie Casey. With all the noise around new menu ideas at the start of a year, and the fact that anyone can ‘google’ food trends, we think it’s important that our qual insights are driven by operators who live and breathe innovation. It really brings a unique perspective to Omne clients. A great example is the conversation around ‘small plates’. Some are still touting small plates as being ‘on-trend’ but Insider takes a different view, noting how cost-conscious consumers are starting to push-back; feeling less satisfied and still with a hefty bill at the end of the evening. Insider explores how operators like Leo’s in Clapton and Bistrotheque are focusing on value-generating mains as an alternative and upselling around them. Other breakthrough operators in this issue include POPL, Farmacy and Sunday in Brooklyn and there’s also a review of a resurgent Notting Hill. Michael Gividen - very interesting! I recently had a discussion with a marketing colleague about small plates and my qual insight of one 😉 was that small plates have gone too far. Unless it’s the defining style of the restaurant, such as tapas and cicchetti, with spending review for 2023 showing consumers prioritised holidays and meals out above all else, a selection of tiny dishes are not the only choice one wants on the menu. By the same token, with an eye on food waste, massive portions or, worse still, restaurants that don’t offer for customers to take away leftovers, should be excluded from destination choices! So here’s to exciting value mains that are innovative, delicious and served with great customer service in an enjoyable environment! Keep up the great work! ✨
