Self-advocacy isn't only about getting a seat at the table. For many, it's about survival. After overcoming medical bias, denial of access to critical testing, and being given an estimated survival rate of 4%, Karen Peterson is using her experience to empower cancer patients of colour to make informed decisions about their healthcare and clinical research. Many thanks to Karen for this great contribution to October's DIA Global Forum, speaking about the vital role of lay navigation for improving access to research, the amazing work at Karen's Club, and the investment that is needed to put FDA-mandated Diversity Plans into action. Take a read! ⤵ https://lnkd.in/e3rQu7VP

It was indeed humbling to share the stage with these three amazing people - to facilitate a raw, honest, and utterly compelling panel conversation at Pancare Foundation's Par 5 Sydney Launch at Hilton Sydney. We heard a grieving family's perspective from James Callen, who displayed great strength to step up and take brother Luke Callen's place. At just 46, Luke tragically lost his battle with #pancreaticcancer last month, but not before having a huge impact on the cause before he left us. Associate Professor Kara Vine-Perrow talked about about her cutting edge #cancerresearch project that Pancare Foundation is helping to fund at University of Wollongong. But importantly, Kara addressed 100+ #sydney business leaders about the endless financial challenges faced by cancer and other medical researchers in Australia. As the program Lead, Kara - and many others like her - must navigate constant stress and uncertainty around funding and spends much of her time preparing grant applications for short-term, transactional funding. It is no wonder so many of our brightest minds leave Australia to pursue careers overseas, where they are valued. We were privileged to be joined by Dr. Gary Weiss AM as our third panelist. Gary provided considered perspectives to our discussion that come from deep experience - as a highly successful business leader, a board member of a prominent medical research institute, and someone who has sadly seen pancreatic cancer impact his own family. The overarching message of Par 5, reinforced by our panel discussion, and explored further in audience Q&A - is that we need to vastly improve the way that we fund and support our cancer researchers. Through the Par 5 Commercial Program, we are building a long-term funding vehicle, founded upon creating mutual benefits for all involved, that can deliver scalable and sustainable investment into upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancer research. Early detection and prevention are key strategies for improving health - and utilizing technology for an unprecedented view of what is going on in our bodies is one strategy that is effective for all sorts of women's health issues including the link between breast density and breast cancer.
MEET THE NATIONAL COALITION FOR ULTRASOUND SCREENING The Women’s Health Collaborative (WHC) officially launches what educational director Dr. Roberta Kline calls “the ultimate alliance of women’s health champions”. This united volunteer group consists of public resources for women’s cancer, dense breast advocacy, research foundations of complex disorders (ie. Endometriosis and pelvic floor issues) and medical specialists from the private sector. This coalition aligns the promotion of ultrasound technology as the common life-saving solution for affordable and effective medical screening programs. https://lnkd.in/ek_Nt42Z

Immersed in a whirlwind of insights and inspiration at the Cytecare Hospitals 🎗️ I’m just writing to say that, of all the sessions I’ve ever been to, this was by far the best. ♻️ #SCDM23 I learned more in one session. This is by far the best. The visit has caused me to ask myself how to derive clinical lessons from the resources, and that has not happened very often before.... I found the visit to the cancer facility very useful indeed, to the extent that I haven't stopped thinking and rethinking so much of what you all said. I am already working on some short term Learning objectives which I have set myself on the patients engagement. The first opening question changed my perspective on things entirely. Real insight and complete focus. This is a clear how the industry can transform to embody a more human perspective and use it as a collective north star that will positively impact all stakeholders― patients, sponsors, investigators, caregivers, CRAs, Regulatory, shareholders, and the clinical research professional ―alike. Most importantly, what’s possible when you create high-quality, deeply felt alliances that deliver patient-driven care with value to all. Humanizing Healthcare is the future of health. ⛑️ Would I recommend the visit to the Cytecare Hospitals? Unequivocally 🧡 As a Budget Manager and I am working for Oncology R&D assets. I don't see the clinical trial timeline as a regular now. I see it as before, during, and after cancer. 🌱 #Bold4Care #ReimaginingMedicine

The Clinical Institutes at Providence Swedish are leading research and innovation. Whether it is studying innovative devices to control post partum hemorrhage at the Women and Children's Institute, using holographic imaging to enhance the safety of neurosurgical procedures at the Neuroscience Institute, non-invasive destruction of liver tumors at the Swedish Cancer Institute/ Digestive Health Institute or leading edge grafts for aortic aneurysm repair at the Heart and Vascular Institute ---- we have a commitment to seeking and creating new and better ways to care for our patients. In addition to exploring new treatments, our clinical research teams are studying the application of new therapies to devastating diseases - like our trials of CAR-T cell therapy in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus and Multiple Sclerosis. #SwedishCancerInstitute #SwedishNeuroscienceInstitute #SwedishDigestiveHealthInstitute #SwedishHeartandVascularInstitute #SwedishWomenandChildrensInstitute #SwedishMedicalCenter

On this #ClinicalTrialsDay, we commemorate Dr. James Lind's pioneering work on May 20, 1747, when he conducted the first-ever randomized controlled trial. Despite this milestone, we still have a long way to go in educating people about the importance and impact of clinical trials. #ClinicalResearch #HealthcareInnovation https://lnkd.in/givtHTTB #AYACSM #Tylenolstartedhere
