Steward of Jackalope Junction, the world's first Steampunk Western StoryPark! Unconventional Free Thinker, Maverick, and Perfectionist.
What makes Jackalope Junction Different (than other theme parks)? Story. Most, if not all, theme parks combine a hodgepodge of stories - none really interconnected, to create the idea that they are a “theme” park and not a more traditional amusement park. These stories can be contained to one attraction each, where sometimes they are a very immersive experience, like in the case of Disney’s “Peter Pan’s Flight”, where riders are whisked aboard a small flying ship, and taken on a journey through the story of Peter Pan. As of late, the trend for most theme parks, and the easiest, or least “risky” option when creating a new park or a new “land”, is to simply license a pre-existing IP. Designs exist, characters exist, stories to branch from exist, and chances are there is already a built-in audience. What could be simpler? Jackalope Junction though is a different kind of theme park, in fact, we call it a “Storypark”, as it doesn’t have different lands or rides that are disconnected story-wise. In fact, we call it a Storypark because the whole park is focused around one story, the characters of that story, and the adventures within it. We won’t have a plethora of rides and attractions that are there just for the fun of having them, but each one is curated and considered to fit into the story of Jackalope Junction- some custom designed and built specifically for it, with none like them elsewhere in the world, and some customized and crafted to be storytelling elements. Each one specifically will have a purpose within the story. Speaking of story, the whole park is like walking into a living, breathing town full of people, anthropomorphic animals, robots, cyborg gunslingers and the occasional traveling salesman. The story of Jackalope Junction as it happens day to day. And the dark history of what it was before - where guests will be able to discover that history - either passively or actively. Guests can choose to just enjoy their day or days there, as if visiting a historic town, or choose to learn about the history and dark past. Each of these elements, from the shops to the restaurants to the rides, all are part of one story, as well as every single feature and attraction. To promote this grand little town, this “Storypark”, we’ll have a companion television series that shows life in the town, its backstories, and day to day goings on- with some drama, a twist of humor, and lots of good old down home wisdom, as well as books, comics, heck, even maybe a moving picture show! Jackalope Junction is being created to be nothing like anything ever imagined before- a fully immersive adventure experience for the whole family that brings back good old fashioned wholesome values and entertainment for a very weary world. So, are you ready for something completely different than you’ve ever experienced in your life? If yes, then help us, help me, bring this to life… The Jackalope Junction WeFunder campaign: https://lnkd.in/gcNG52fV

Ever wandered through Disneyland and felt like you were stepping into a grand fairy tale kingdom? The secret often lies in a clever technique called forced perspective. Let’s dive into what it is, how it works, and why it’s so powerful. What is Forced Perspective? Forced perspective uses optical illusion to make objects appear larger, smaller, closer, or farther away than they really are. By manipulating the scale and positioning of objects, designers can trick our eyes into seeing something that defies usual expectations of size and distance. Disneyland’s Enchanted Example Disneyland masterfully uses forced perspective. Take Sleeping Beauty Castle: from a distance, it looks towering and majestic. In reality, the upper sections are built at a smaller scale, making the castle appear much taller. Main Street, U.S.A. employs the same trick, with upper stories scaled down, creating a longer, more expansive, yet cozy atmosphere. When to Use Forced Perspective • Immersive Environments: Perfect for theme parks, film sets, and theatrical productions. • Maximizing Space: Creates a sense of depth and expansiveness in limited spaces. • Highlighting Features: Draws attention to key features or landmarks, making them appear larger or closer. When Not to Use Forced Perspective • Functional Spaces: Inaccurate scale and proportion can cause practical issues in areas like kitchens or bathrooms. • Close Inspection Areas: The illusion may fall apart if people can get too close to the objects. Benefits of Forced Perspective • Cost-Effective Grandeur: Creates the illusion of grandeur without high costs, saving space and materials. • Enhanced Storytelling: Heightens the sense of awe and wonder, making experiences more engaging. • Visitor Flow: Subtly guides movements and improves layout in places like Disneyland. Forced perspective is a magical design tool that transforms spaces and captivates audiences. Whether creating a theme park, designing an exhibit, or maximizing a small space, this technique helps achieve remarkable results. So next time you stroll down Main Street or gaze up at a castle, remember – there's more to the magic than meets the eye! Let's connect, dream and create together! justyn@storylandstudios.com PlainJoe Storyland Studios

Anaheim will vote today on Disneyland Forward. "The city of Anaheim’s planning commission is scheduled Monday to review the proposal for Disneyland, dubbed the “happiest place on Earth.” The project — which would require Disney to invest at least $1.9 billion in the theme park, lodging, entertainment and related uses over the next decade — still must be approved by the city council before taking effect." I loved this part. "Right now, there isn’t enough room in the original Disneyland in California to build something on a large scale without affecting existing attractions, which are relished by loyal, long-time visitors to the company’s oldest theme park, Alde said." Tomorrowland and Hollywood Pictures Backlot (or whatever it's current name is) are begging not to be forgotten when the shiny new lands come rolling in. Do I think it will pass? Yes, Disneyland and Anaheim have a much less contentious relationship than they did when the 4th hotel and Eastern Gateway fell apart. Am I so sure we'll get the full giant sprawling 3rd theme park equivalent? Not so sure yet. But the zoning changes will allow Disney more flexibility in what they create. And for the city, its win/win. Disney either builds more (and makes jobs, pays taxes, and increases attendance) or pays the fines for not meeting the promised investment levels (cost of doing business for them). Either way, the city has increased revenue. Unless the neighborhood opposition really struck a chord with the city council, I would be surprised if this didn't pass. https://lnkd.in/egTZwjTY #letsmakeplans #themeparks #themedentertainment #themedesign #disneyparks

Today, we're diving into the art of creating unforgettable theme park experiences through emotional journey design. This is where the magic happens. A great theme park isn't just rides and attractions; it's a carefully orchestrated emotional voyage. Let's explore how to create these powerful experiences: • Understand Your Emotional Palette Like a painter with colors, a designer needs to grasp the full spectrum of emotions. Joy, wonder, excitement, nostalgia, even fear - these are our tools. As Disney Imagineer John Hench said, "What we're selling is not just amusement, but emotional experiences" (Hench & Van Pelt, 2003). • Create an Emotional Arc Think of your park layout as a story with a beginning (anticipation), middle (emotional peaks and valleys), and end (satisfaction). The Tower of Terror is a great example, building anticipation through the abandoned hotel, peaking with thrilling drops, and ending in exhilarated relief. • Use Multisensory Design Engage all senses to trigger emotions. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter masters this, from the sound of the Hogwarts Express to the taste of Butterbeer. • Leverage the Power of Transitions Spaces between attractions can reset emotions, build anticipation, or provide respite. Theme park designer Cynthia Sharpe notes, "Transitions are the connective tissue of the guest experience" (Sharpe, 2019). • Personalize the Experience Allow for personal choice and interaction. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge does this brilliantly, letting visitors shape their own story through interactive elements. Designing for emotional journeys transforms parks into unforgettable experiences by: • Deeper Immersion: When emotions are engaged, visitors aren't just observing - they're living the experience. • Increased Memorability: Emotional experiences are more likely to be remembered and shared. • Higher Satisfaction: A well-crafted emotional journey leaves visitors feeling fulfilled and eager to return. • Brand Loyalty: Strong emotional connections foster brand loyalty and repeat visits. • Word-of-Mouth Marketing: Emotionally impactful experiences are more likely to be recommended to others. As expert David Younger says, "The most successful theme parks are those that understand they're not in the business of selling rides, but of selling emotions" (Younger, 2016). By focusing on the emotional journey, we're not just designing parks - we're crafting experiences that become part of people's lives. We're creating magic, one carefully designed emotion at a time. Remember, in theme parks, emotions aren't just the icing on the cake - they're the whole recipe. Now, go out there and cook up some magic! Think about your most memorable theme park experience. What emotions did you feel throughout your visit, and how did the park's design contribute to those feelings? Let’s connect, dream and create together!
