3 surprising facts about air pollution according to WHO data, on this #InternationalCleanAirDay. Did you know? ☁ More than 9 out of 10 of the world's population lives in places where air pollution exceeds safe air quality limits. ☁ Air pollution is the fourth largest threat to human health, responsible for 15% of all global deaths from air pollution-related diseases. ☁ Almost all deaths (94%) linked to air pollution occur in low- and middle- income countries. Parts of Africa, Eastern Europe, India, China, and the Middle East are the biggest danger spots. The clear solution is to reduce emissions of pollutants in the first place, but trees can be of great help acting as the "lungs" of an ecosystem. 🌿Tiny pores on the leaves of trees, called stomata, inhale air that contains toxic gaseous air pollutants. Once absorbed, gases, including pollutants such as SO2, NO2, CO2, and ozone, diffuse within the inner surfaces of the leaves, are broken down, and oxygen is emitted. 🌿Trees also act like the "liver" of an ecosystem, removing harmful particulate matter from the air by temporarily "catching" it on their vegetative surfaces. When it rains, these particulates wash off of the tree and are carried into the soil or dissolve into stormwater. 🌲Not all tree species are created equal. Conifers like pines and cypresses are among the best pollution filters, their success partially due to their canopy structure - the dense canopy of needle-like leaves is very effective at trapping pollutants. And because they don't drop their leaves in winter like deciduous trees, evergreen species act as year-round filters. More than half of Europe’s heat-related deaths in summer 2022 were linked to pollution. A new study by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health reveals a staggering impact: over half of the heat-related deaths across Europe in the summer of 2022 were linked to pollution, much of it from greenhouse gas emissions. 56% could have been avoided if not for fossil fuel pollution, which worsened the extreme heat. The transportation sector is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, making the time spent inside your car—and your exposure to pollution—an important health factor. At CabinAir, we’re dedicated to reducing the impact of traffic-related pollution, so you can breathe easier on every journey. The International Day of Clean Air for blue skies, observed on September 7, emphasizes the urgent need to combat air pollution, which is a leading cause of ill health and premature deaths globally. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlights that air pollution disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly. This year's theme, "Invest in #CleanAirNow," calls for increased investment and shared responsibility to address air quality issues. The World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on the Future of Clean Air aims to foster collaboration among governments, businesses, and civil society to develop effective solutions. Key points include the significant health impacts of PM2.5 particles, the necessity for political commitment to clean air, and the importance of open data in improving air quality. The EU targets a 55% reduction in premature deaths from air pollution by 2030, underscoring the critical need for collective action to ensure everyone can breathe clean air. International clean air for blue skies day Air pollution is the biggest environmental health risk of our time. Breathing clean air and looking at blue sky’s without clouds of pollution should be a basic human right. The Health impact of pollution results in tiny, invisible particles of pollution penetrate deep into our lungs, bloodstream and bodies. These pollutants are responsible for deaths from stroke, chronic respiratory disease, and lung cancer. We need to take responsibility for our individual and organisational environmental impact. We need to think about how we pollute the air we breathe and what has gone into the manufacturing and supply of the products we purchase. Are you turning off unnecessary heating or air conditioning? Are you planning travel in the most environmental way, including the use of public transport, car sharing, push bikes and walking? If you drive a petrol or diesel vehicle make sure you don’t idle the engine. Are you organising and disposing of recycled waste appropriately to reduce landfill waste and the harmful release of chemicals? When making a purchase are you considering how the product was manufactured? Air pollution sees no boarders and travels around the globe impacting every one of us. Remember when we pollute the atmosphere the people we love breathe in the pollution. Let’s work together to do better and reduce pollution. #cleanair #un #enviroment #esg #pollution #bluesky #health #stutainable #smog #enviromental

Recently, I participated in an Air Pollution workshop led by Clean Air Crew, in collaboration with pluc.tv TV and Wingify Earth Foundation, through TATVA RCDU. It focused on raising awareness about air pollution through storytelling. During the workshop, Abhinaya Sekar Ma'am shared some invaluable insights on Air pollution that reshaped my understanding: 1. Myth: Air pollution is a winter problem. Reality: Contrary to popular belief, air pollution isn't limited to winter months. It persists throughout the year due to industrial activities, transportation, etc, it's just that the visibility and media coverage increases during winters. 2. Myth: Shutting down schools and workplaces helps fight air pollution. Reality: While temporarily closing institutions might seem like a quick fix, it disrupts economies without addressing the root causes. (It's like turning off the smoke alarm instead of putting out the fire). Sustainable solutions focus on reducing emissions and adopting cleaner technologies. 3. Myth: Smoke guns and water sprinklers help fight air pollution. Reality: While these measures may provide immediate alleviation, they fail to tackle the underlying sources of pollution. (It is as effective as trying to cool the Sahara desert by sprinkling water) 4. Myth: Indoor air pollution is lesser. Reality: Indoor air pollution is actually on the rise because of discoveries of the effects of VOCs from cooking, smoking, air fresheners, cleaners, and household products. Improved ventilation is especially crucial to mitigate these risks. 5. Myth: Stubble burning is the sole cause of winter air pollution. Reality: While stubble burning is a contributor, winter pollution is influenced by other factors including vehicular emissions, industrial activities, and meteorological conditions. Hope you learned something out of it!🌱 #cleanair #sustainability #EnvironmentalAwareness #climatechange

Investigate pollution patterns with space-time analysis Outdoor air pollution is a major environmental health problem affecting everyone in low, middle, and high-income countries. Ambient (outdoor) air pollution in both cities and rural areas was estimated to cause 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide per year in 2019; this mortality is due to exposure to fine particulate matter, which causes cardiovascular and respiratory disease, and cancers. People living in low-and middle-income countries disproportionately experience the burden of outdoor air pollution with 89% (of the 4.2 million premature deaths) occurring in these areas. The greatest burden is found in the WHO South-East Asia and Western Pacific Regions. The latest burden estimates reflect the significant role air pollution plays in cardiovascular illness and death. The International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies is designed to emphasize the importance of clean air to overall life quality and strengthen international cooperation towards improving air quality and reducing air pollution. According to WHO, these are the African countries with the best ambient air pollution. Air Pollution Air pollution is the single greatest environmental risk to human health and one of the main avoidable causes of death and disease globally. Over six million deaths annually and 93 billion days of illness are attributed to poor air quality globally. The burning of fossil fuels for power, transportation, and industry is the main source of the carbon emissions driving climate change and a major contributor to air pollution that usually results in health damage. The impact of air pollution includes Cancer, Lung inflammation, Sore throat, Obesity, and immune system disorder. Warming climate worsens air quality. If actions are not taken to tackle air pollution and current emissions continue, ground-level ozone events are expected to intensify, especially in densely populated areas, leading to respiratory illness. Clean Air Clean air is only beneficial for the health and everyone’s daily life. Cleaner air means fewer pollutants that can be redeposited onto land and water bodies, resulting in improved water quality cleaner lungs, better digestion, better sleep patterns, decreased adhesive allergies, clearer skin and better life quality. Celebrate the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies by taking a step towards reducing your carbon footprint. We can reduce air pollution through collective investment of time and resources and spreading awareness. What steps have you taken towards reducing air pollution? #oluseunonasoga

Pollutants that are particularly harmful to health include particulate matter, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. The challenges of global air pollution overlap with those of climate change. Sources of air pollution could be mobile, stationary, natural or area specific. Here are 5 sobering facts about global outdoor air pollution … 1. Even air that may look or smell clean could be polluted. Most people across the planet are exposed to unhealthy levels of air pollutants. 2. Some people suffer more than others. Children, senior citizens, and those with existing health conditions are more vulnerable to the effects of air pollution. 3. Fine particle outdoor air pollution, PM 2.5 accounts for the largest amount of disease burden. PM 2.5 refers to airborne particles measuring less than 2.5 micrometers in aerodynamic diameter. 4. Smog and soot are the two most common and visible types of air pollution. Both occur due to the burning of fossil fuels and are damaging to the lungs. 5. Rising air pollution can cut life expectancy by > 5 years in South Asia. South Asia accounts for > half of global total life years lost to air pollution. Important collective steps to reduce air pollution: a) adding and improving air quality measurement systems across the globe, b) transitioning to clean energy use and c) educating citizens on the harmful effects of air pollution #sustainability #airpollution #globalburdenofdisease Image source: https://lnkd.in/dnrKkP7Z
