Reflecting on last night’s presidential debate, here’s a message to both candidates: severely limiting people entering the US will end up damaging American #entrepreneurship in the long term. #Immigrants play an outsized role in US entrepreneurship and innovation. Despite making up only 14% of the total US population…: 📊 immigrants are responsible for 1 in 4 new employer businesses in the nation 🦄 have founded 55% of US unicorns 🤓 are responsible for almost 25% of all recent patents. If the US wants to keep being a competitive global power, it must embrace immigrants and recognize their value within the US economic system, especially if it wants to stay at the forefront of the #AI & tech race. Over the next decade, harsher immigration rules will inevitably push foreign entrepreneurs into the more welcoming arms of other nations. Competing global superpowers like #Canada are already poaching immigrant talent who studied in the US but find it impossible to settle in the country afterward. We see it everyday – immigrants are empirically more effective #entrepreneurs, and we are proud to stand on this hill and continue to demonstrate it. Here’s a question to other VCs and people in the startup world: what can we do better to enable entrepreneurial immigrants to build, innovate and break barriers inside the US? #Innovation #Startups #EconomicGrowth #FutureOfWork #Inclusion

Immigrant Entrepreneurs: Fueling American Innovation and Job Growth Immigrant entrepreneurs are vital drivers of job creation, innovation, and new business formation in the United States. They're behind a quarter of new employer businesses and are especially likely to find innovative and high-tech firms. In fact, the four most valuable private U.S. companies and three of the ten most valuable public companies globally in 2022 had immigrant founders! This trend goes even further - over half of American startup unicorns (valued at $1 billion or more) had at least one immigrant founder, and nearly two-thirds were founded or co-founded by immigrants or their children. The rise of immigrant entrepreneurship is happening nationwide, not just in a few regions. These entrepreneurs are known for their innovative spirit, often developing groundbreaking ideas from unexpected places. Take Eric Yuan, founder of Zoom Video, who envisioned a video conferencing app after enduring long train rides to visit his girlfriend as a student in China. Studies show businesses owned by immigrants are more likely to hold patents and have more patents per employee, further highlighting their innovative nature. The immigrant share of inventors in the U.S. has grown significantly, from 24% in 2000 to 35% in 2016. This focus on innovation, particularly in high-tech, is linked to economic growth, job creation, and the formation of tech hubs. Immigrant entrepreneurs are associated with a net gain in jobs, responsible for roughly one in four jobs in young firms. They're nearly twice as likely to start businesses as U.S.-born citizens, and in 2018, accounted for 28.5% of all new entrepreneurs despite being only 13.7% of the population. The impact is undeniable - over 40% of Fortune 500 firms have immigrant founders, generating a whopping $6.1 trillion in global revenue and providing jobs for 13.5 million people worldwide in 2019. While there's still much to learn about immigrant entrepreneurship, experts emphasize the need for supportive immigration policies. Immigrant entrepreneurs are a powerful driver of innovation and job growth, especially in high-tech sectors. “The past is our definition. We may strive, with good reason to escape it but we will escape it only by adding something better to it.” I was born into a family of lifelong immigrant entrepreneurs displaced by wars and conflict. I myself became such an immigrant. There's a lot of ignorance when it comes to understanding immigrants. The word itself has become bastardised by low-balling populists. The word 'immigrant' has been lobbed around to mean anything from people fleeing for their lives to the surgeon standing over you in the operating theatre. Immigrants make for great entrepreneurs. They represent #antifragility. Entrepreneurs build; they combat inequality, they democratise products/ services, making them more accessible to the masses. Think Ryanair, EasyJet, Chobani, etc. A 2012 study found immigrants were more likely to start businesses than those native to the 69 countries surveyed. In the US, 13.7% of the pop. is foreign-born, immigrants represent 20.2% of the self-employed, 25% of startup founders. By 2023 immigrants had founded 55% of unicorns. Migrants to the UK since 2000 are less likely to receive benefits than people already living in country. Migrants made net contribution of £25bn-£30BN to public coffers. EEA migrants most likely to make a positive contribution, paying 34% more in taxes than they received between 2001 to 2011, according to UCL. 14% of UK start-ups founded by immigrant entrepreneurs. In 2016 there were 456,073 immigrant entrepreneurs who founded 464,527 businesses employing 8.3m people. THE FOUNDER'S MINDSET involves a different brain; the ability to rapidly learn, unlearn and re-learn (growth), high tolerance for ambiguity, mindfulness (awareness/ alertness), grit, fortitude, empathy, flex and drive which for many comes from an 'always-on' achievement bias. They face threats particularly well. Some have a higher threshold for pain and for tolerating difficulty. Sometimes to a fault. They also face additional risks, from xenophobia, unemployment, underemployment, bullying, psychological trauma and abuse. People with a high tolerance are more likely than others to see emigration and entrepreneurship as viable paths precisely because of their appetite for risk, which helped them go abroad in the first place. Top Insights/ HBR study: 1. Risk: high willingness to take risks, even after controlling for age, gender, entrepreneurship experience, and other variables. 2. Achievement drive: tendency to set and accomplish challenging goals were significantly more likely than others to emigrate and become entrepreneurs. 3. Support needs to be tailored to the needs of founders. Fail fast needs a crash mat for it to be constructive/ healthy/ safe/ sustained 4. Adaptable; better at working in uncertain multicultural settings. #flex #empathy https://lnkd.in/e7rWFURh #immigrants #builders #founders #mindset #impact #adaptability #legacybuilders #jobs #equitablegrowth #support #funding #ecosystems

Following the movement led by The New European, PLACE Network is joining the campaign to form a European Parliament Intergroup on Inclusive Entrepreneurship. The end goal is simple: make entrepreneurship accessible to everyone, regardless of gender, age, background, or experience. 💪 A more inclusive entrepreneurship policy could create up to 7.5 million new entrepreneurs in Europe. If each of these new entrepreneurs hires one person, that's 15 million new jobs created in Europe. It’s time to break barriers and create equal opportunities for all entrepreneurs. This intergroup can develop a strategy to help diverse entrepreneurs thrive. 🤝 We need collaboration across party lines, sectors, and civil society. With MEPs' support, we can create a platform in the European Parliament to advance inclusive entrepreneurship. Let’s challenge stereotypes and promote inclusive narratives on migration and entrepreneurship. Together, we can build a more equitable entrepreneurial landscape in Europe. Show your support and join the alliance here: https://lnkd.in/eG4XxD8v #InclusiveEntrepreneurship #EU #Intergroup #Inclusion #Diversity #Equity #Sustainability #Growth #Transitions #SocialEconomy

Forbes 30 Under 30 | Founder and CEO at ETA Technologies | Assisting investors in gaining a better understanding of the human capital within startups
🌍 Immigrants are not just part of the startup ecosystem — they are driving it. 🚀 According to research, 55% of #unicorn founders are either immigrants or second-generation immigrants. While I may not be a #unicorn founder, as a Cambridge-based entrepreneur with ETA Technologies who wasn’t born in the UK, this topic deeply resonates with me. Recently, I had the honour of participating in a The Entrepreneurs Network conversation on Envisioning the Future of Immigration. Philip Salter brought together a diverse group of experts — like Nick Rollason and Madeleine Sumption — and individuals like myself, each with a personal stake in this matter. We openly discussed the challenges, shared ideas, and brainstormed solutions for the #future. Key takeaway? If the UK is to maintain its place as a leading startup hub in the ongoing #AI race, we must embrace and attract more engineering and entrepreneurial talent. 💡 The strength of any ecosystem lies in its diversity, and that diversity is a key driver of innovation. A big thank you to David Herbada, Ben Burnett-Armstrong, Farzin Yazdi, David Gilgur and Rudy Parengal for the stimulating discussion. Let’s continue working together to foster an inclusive, forward-thinking environment for #future entrepreneurs. 🤝

Immigrating to a new country is much like starting a company. My family first immigrated to Canada when I was a high school freshman, and I later came to the US for my PhD at Harvard University and subsequent transition to venture capital — I can attest that both require similar skills and mindsets to succeed. 🚀 Just as immigrants dream of a better life and new opportunities, entrepreneurs have a vision💡 for their startup. It takes immense courage to leave behind the familiar and venture into the unknown. Immigrants must adapt to new cultures, languages, and environments, learning to thrive despite initial obstacles. Similarly, starting a company requires resilience in the face of setbacks and the ability to pivot when necessary. Ultimately, both immigrants and entrepreneurs contribute significantly to their communities and economies. Immigrants bring diverse perspectives and skills, enriching the cultural fabric, while entrepreneurs drive innovation, creating jobs and economic value. One is an investment in your life, the other is an investment in a product you truly believe in. 📊Statistics reflect this connection: 43 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 in the 2017 Fortune 500 were 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨-𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭, and among the Top 35, that share is 57 percent. These figures are not surprising to me because immigrants or their children have already navigated through the unknowns once and have what it takes to start a new venture and succeed! #Immigration #Entrepreneurship #Resilience #Courage #Innovation #Startups #ImmigrantFounders #Vision #Adaptability #Networking #CommunityImpact #EconomicGrowth #Leadership #Success #CulturalDiversity #Inspiration #Opportunity #Persistence #GlobalTalent #BusinessGrowth #VentureCapital image source: https://lnkd.in/evjxRKtX
