A man in Mexico died after contracting H5N2 avian influenza in late April. The patient was already suffering from chronic health problems, and the WHO rapidly stated that the death was ‘multifactorial’. The virus may thus not have been the direct cause of death. Contamination between humans and animals can occur through direct contact with sick birds or their secretions. The H5N2 strain has been detected in poultry in Mexico and other countries, and Mexican authorities are still investigating whether humans were infected by an animal or a person. More recently, two other cases of H5N1 avian influenza have been reported in the United States, but they were linked to an epidemic in cows and did not represent a high risk for the population. source https://buff.ly/4bYFBEc #zoonosis #publichealth #h5n2 #avianinfluenza #virus

The alarming spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has taken a chilling turn as reports emerge of its first-ever infections in cattle across multiple states. While the virus has typically targeted avian and mammalian species, its leap to cattle raises red flags. Could this be the ominous precursor to a human pandemic? Ronald St. John, MD, MPH, co-founder of Sitata, delves into the latest developments and the looming spectre of a potential global crisis. https://lnkd.in/gMJt4hGd #safewithSITATA #health #avian #influenza #h5n1 #risk #riskmanagement #riskintelligence #travelsafety

Today, Australia announced its first-ever human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) — a significant development in the ongoing monitoring of avian influenza. The infected child is believed to have contracted the virus while in India — which saw reports of H5N1 in dead birds in at least two locations in May. While BlueDot assesses this event as low risk for the general population, the current situation suggests the possibility of undetected mild human cases and highlights the potential for more frequent spillovers into humans. This, in turn, increases the risk of the virus evolving to support more efficient human-to-human transmission. The key takeaway is the critical need for continued and enhanced surveillance in both human and animal populations, along with wastewater/environmental surveillance sampling. Monitoring outbreaks in animal populations can play an essential role in responding to human cases. This vigilance, along with an overall One Health approach, helps us better get ahead of outbreaks and respond to emerging threats. Good news from Europe - avian flu cases are declining! A recent report shows that in 2024 Europe recorded the lowest number of cases in poultry and wild birds since 2019/2020, and the risk to the general public remains low. The improvement in Europe is likely linked to several factors, including immunity developed by wild birds following previous infection; reduction of certain wild bird populations; decreased environmental contamination; and changes in the composition of viral genotypes.
