This internally flawless marvel is one of the rarest diamonds to ever surface. Christie's International Head of Jewellery, Rahul Kadakia, revealed the sale price, remarking on the diamond's significant yield amidst global economic challenges. Max Fawcett, the head of Christie's jewellery in Geneva, noted the diamond's distinct deep blue hue and classic pear shape as key to its allure, capturing the attention of global collectors. The "Bleu Royal" was a standout in an auction that saw over $77 million in sales, indicating a robust market for exceptional colored stones and signed jewellery. Science uses technical terminology to unambiguously describe materials whereas the jewellery trade used terminology to describe products and the World Jewellery Confederation - CIBJO is in the middle making sure the consumer gets a fair communication from the trade by recommending nomenclature practices as published in the CIBJO Gemstone Book. Rubellite is one of those trade terms and refers the pink to red-coloured tourmalines that have a distinct manganese-related pink to red colour in both daylight and incandescent light. Note that the term has the same Latin origin than ruby! Technically, tourmaline is not strictly a mineral but rather a complex supergroup that includes a few mineral species with gemmological interest and in the case of pink, three have been reported: elbaite (the most common), fluor-liddicoatite and rossmanite. Irradiation of pale pink tourmaline, oxidizing Mn2+ to Mn3+ and causing vivid pink to red colour, is a common trade practice being currently a non-determined treatment since the artificial irradiation-induced colour it is virtually indistinguishable from the natural irradiation-induced pink to red colour. The longtime colour-based verbal tradition have kept mineralogical terms away from the trade lexicon where a simple “pink tourmaline” or “rubellite” will do the job. Pearl or natural pearl? This is indeed an interesting terminology debate. According to the World Jewellery Confederation - CIBJO, a natural pearl must be formed without human intervention in the interior of molluscs and within naturally formed pearl sacs and the word "pearl", if used without qualification, shall refer only to a natural pearl, but further recommends, to avoid confusion and/or misinterpretation, that natural pearls be labelled as "natural pearls”. If the pearl secretion is formed with human intervention, and that has been documented for centuries, then the word "cultured" must be associated: if formed within a cultured pearl sac, a cultured pearl, if not formed within a cultured pearl sac, a cultured blister, for example. Natural pearls in the modern markets, specially if not within Persian or Arabian cultures, are seldom seen as most pearl products in the jewellery industry are cultured pearls (e.g. akoya cultured pearls, south sea cultured pearls, tahitian cultured pearls, freshwater cultured pearls). However, these cultured pearls are only occasionally referred to as "cultured pearls" with the word "pearl" being used to describe them. The argument being the fact that it is implied that consumers acknowledge that if they were natural pearls they would be highlighted as such. It happens that not everyone is educated in pearl facts and following the current industry standards by CIBJO will result in an unambiguous and very clear discourse. Yellow to orange (to pink) topaz became well known in jewellery only after the discovery of the rich deposits of the Ouro Preto region, in Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the first half of the 1700s. Although yellow topaz was already known to occur in Saxony, Germany, the more saturated oranges to reddish hues from the Brazilian stones associated with larger production numbers, made an impact in the period jewellery scene that still holds prestige to this day. These gem varieties are sometimes referred to in the trade as “imperial topaz”, a designation that became understood in the trade as the commercial name of the intense orangey to reddish chromium-bearing variety of topaz that, like many colour descriptors or trade designations, it is not a universal gemmological term. However, the origin of this trade expression is uncertain as some sources advocate that it has been attributed in 1881 during a visit of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil to Ouro Preto and other sources state that the term was associated with the pink topaz from Sanarka in the Ural Mountains, known since the mid-19th century and that were allegedly for exclusive use of the Romanov imperial family.
