Some of us on the OneSTL communications team take transit regularly - but not all of us. Transit isn't always available where we are going, or the added travel time can be too great. #DumpthePump Day on June 20 is a great time to try transit, and new transit riders can sign up for a free transit pass for the month of July here: https://lnkd.in/ghvtnzQW If you wish transit were different in your area, you can join other voices calling for change, like Citizens for Modern Transit. We need cities that are built for people, not cars. Transit, tree cover, intersection safety, and crosswalk availability all go into creating a walkable city. Safety and availability are often cited as key concerns with transit. What other ways can we help make cities more walkable or encourage mass transit?

This news article (https://lnkd.in/gYHtXTiY) describes my presentation to the Victoria Transit Commission as president of Better Island Transit (https://lnkd.in/gqWpRtsH ) which advocates for more frequent and affordable bus service on Vancouver Island, particularly between Victoria and Nanaimo. The current service is terrible; only four daily buses between Victoria and Duncan on a route with 25,000 daily vehicle-trips. Local officials are supportive but this ultimately depends on the Ministry of Transportation shifting funds from highway expansions to public transit service improvements. We hope to make this a provincial election issue. If you agree, please ask Transportation Minister Rob Fleming (Minister.MOTI@gov.bc.ca) and BC Transit CEO Erinn Pinkerton (erinn_pinkerton@bctransit.com), and your MLA (https://lnkd.in/gjiV7mhw) to provide frequent and affordable bus services on the #66 and #70 routes, and to improve interregional bus services throughout BC.

In 2019, a proposal for FASTER Bay Area aimed to transform the region’s transit system with $100 billion over 40 years, but it was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, discussions led by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission are underway for a 2026 ballot measure to sustain and transform Bay Area transit, considering significant fiscal challenges and progress in transit integration since 2019. https://lnkd.in/gt5AeNjr #FASTERBayArea #TransitTransformation #MetropolitanTransportationCommission #RegionalTransit #BayAreaDevelopment

Right now, our leaders must choose: invest in communities and people first, or spend our limited #infrastructure dollars on endless highway expansions that damage both communities and the environment. Putting federal transportation dollars in maintenance, #safestreets, #publictransit, and reconnecting communities will improve our health and wellbeing. Tell your elected officials to invest in our communities today: https://bit.ly/4bqrBUa
It’s time to end endless highway expansions.

🛣️ Ever wondered how U.S. freeways are numbered? It’s #NationalReadARoadMapDay so let's break it down! 🔹Odds and evens: Key interstate routes are identified by one or two numbers after the "I" prefix—such as I-90, I-80, and I-40. Odd numbers denote north-south orientations, while even numbers signify east-west directions. 🔹From west to east: Interstate numbers indicate their starting points. Highways with lower numbers originate in the west and increment as they head eastward. For instance, I-5 traces a north-south path through California, while I-95 spans from Miami to Maine. 🔹Three-digit complexities: Highways with three-digit numbers, often termed "beltways" or "spurs," encircle cities, offering convenient alternatives to driving through urban areas." 📍 Understanding this numbering system helps travelers navigate efficiently and plan their routes effectively. Keep cruising with confidence! 🚗💨 🎥: https://lnkd.in/d9taXR9F

As cities and metropolitan areas grow, they increase their needs for a variety of infrastructure, including multiple transportation options. Axios ran a story this summer about multimodal infrastructure for the Research Triangle area in North Carolina. and the federal funding recently provided for it. Has your community or region been developing long-term plans to provide the transportation infrastructure it will require for a sustainable future? Transit options are usually only supported after great effort. While perusing through other stories on transportation, I also found one on the desire to restart a Southern rail line from Mobile to New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina took out that link and politics and other obstacles have interfered with a revived Amtrak line between those two points. Are there other possibilities for rail service which would connect those cities, such as more inland routes with spokes reaching out to coastal cities? #transportation #infrastructure #regionalexpansion #urbangrowth #transit #rail #passengerrail #transportationgrid https://lnkd.in/eczrxM-X

Challenges in bringing back transit riders after COVID - and already declining ridership prior to COVID - will lead to a $730 million annual "fiscal cliff" beginning in 2026 after federal emergency funds are expended. New and innovative strategic plans from RTA and Metra, CMAP's Plan of Action for Regional Transit, and legislation sponsored by State Sen. Ram Villivalam and Rep. Eva-Dina Delgado to consolidate the RTA and its three service boards are all bold steps to leverage the moment to fundamentally rethink how we deliver mobility in Northeast Illinois.
