Did I just spot an Indian influencer at the Cannes Film Festival? And another one? And another one? It seems that since last year, Cannes has been rolling out the red carpet not just for the biggest names in film, but also for a veritable army of Indian influencers. There was a time when the fabled Cannes red carpet was an exclusive space graced by the likes of Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Heidi Klum, Brad Pitt, and our very own Aishwarya Rai, each of them strutting their stuff against the flashlight of a thousand cameras. It was a rarefied atmosphere. But now, the red carpet feels less like a showcase of cinematic excellence and more like a social media free-for-all - a tableau of influencers and lesser-known celebrities vying for attention alongside the A-listers. Now, don't get me wrong - I'm not one to begrudge anyone a good time on the French Riviera. If these influencers have found a way to walk on one of the lesser red carpet at Cannes (yes there isn’t just the one red carpet) who am I to object? Or if there are agencies selling tickets to attend a screening or gala dinner (yes, allegedly everything is available for a price) why should I care? After all, there are far more pressing issues in the world than getting on the guest list at a film festival. And let's be honest - for the influencers themselves, this is an incredible opportunity. Who wouldn't want to experience the glitz and glamour of Cannes and capture it all for their followers?   Some publications have been talking about how the influencer brigade is good for India's image, but it's not as if the world is suddenly going to sit up and take notice of Indian cinema because desi social media stars are posting selfies from the Croisette. Ever noticed at the paparazzi parked in the background when one of these influencers is striking a pose at Cannes? They aren’t paying any attention to their pageantry. Only goes to show that you can buy a ticket to Cannes but you can’t buy international fame. As an observer, I can't help but feel that the influencer parade may make good commercial sense for the festival but it sure has changed its dynamic. I discussed the phenomenon of emotional imitation and the desire to emulate the models chosen by individuals in these communities. I also highlighted the focus on physical appearance in postmodern societies and how these communities emphasize outward appearance and self-image. I stressed the need to regulate and control advertisements and posts on social media by influencers and celebrities to maintain credibility and protect consumers from misleading advertisements and informations. Additionally, I emphasized the importance of educating consumers about the dangers of "content productions" if consumed without awareness and selectivity.
