We express our deepest sympathies to the businesses, employers, and the communities that are impacted by the devastating California fires.
We are thankful there are different agencies like the US Small Business Administration offering low-interest federal disaster loans available to Southern California businesses, homeowners, renters, and private nonprofit organizations.
They'll also be opening a Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Los Angeles. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Pasadena City College Community Education Center Multi-Purpose Room, 3035 E. Foothill Blvd.
Our thoughts are always with you in these trying times. 🙏

It’s a long road back …
Hey y’all, I just got back from Western North Carolina. Let me tell you what I saw today. You know the saying, “the mountains are calling, and I must go”? For so many of us, those mountains are home – full of family, history, and heart. But today, I saw something else: people from all over the country, with tags from everywhere, coming in to help with demolition as the recovery begins.
.
It’s going to be a long road, and where it hit me hardest was in Swannanoa, where folks are living in tent cities. I brought some supplies and listened to their stories, trying to figure out how we can help. Winter’s closing in fast, and if that wasn’t enough, the floods have displaced bears and rattlesnakes too. Our neighbors are not only dealing with the loss of everything but also facing wildlife in their living spaces. Y’all, this is serious.
.
So, here’s the plan: we’re launching a building blitz. For just $3,500 per structure, we can give these families some stability. I’ve set a goal of 30 structures, but if we raise enough for 50, we’ll make that happen too. I need your hands, your skills (especially if you have them—because Lord knows I don’t), and your dollars. Get your church, real estate office, association, pickleball friends, and family involved.
.
And y’all, my Amazon Wish List is updated. We’re going to outfit these shelters with mattresses, bedding, and heaters to give people dignity and warmth as they plan their next steps. Housing is stability, and we know that better than anyone.
.
I need you. Click the link, share this video, and help us help our neighbors. And for the record, if you’re wondering why I’m not showing it all on camera—it’s because I’m not here to disaster-bait. That’s not what we do. North Carolinians solve problems, and we’re going to do this together.
.
Let’s get to work!

Did you know that every CNYC member building has membership rights in the National Association of Housing Cooperatives? NYC coops and condos have benefited from NAHC's advocacy work for years.
This week, Executive Director Mary Ann Rothman is in Vancouver at NAHC's Annual Conference, helping spearhead efforts to have co-ops and condos exempted from the Corporate Transparency Act and to encourage Congress to pass the Disaster Relief Call To Action, which would open #FEMA funding to cooperatives and condominiums.
At the current time, co-ops and condos impacted by a presidentially declared natural disaster—flood, wildfire, hurricane, tornado, blizzard, drought, or earthquake—are NOT afforded the same #FEMA recovery resources as single-family homeowners, even though they pay the same federal taxes. H.R. 5337 would create access to FEMA funds to repair or replace essential major common area elements facilities like boiler rooms, elevators, roofs, and outside walls. With climate change and flash flooding affecting more NYC buildings each year, the legislation is needed now.
If your co-op/condo has been impacted by flooding, contact your congressperson to ask them to support the Disaster Relief Call to Action bill, and consider attending EDF's event on flooding on October 29.

We are deeply saddened by the recent fires in Los Angeles and stand with all those affected by the Palisades, Eaton, & Hurst Fires during this difficult time. As a community that has already experienced immense loss - having lost our own home in the 2018 Woolsey Fire in Malibu - we understand the pain and devastation that these fires bring.
If you’re looking for ways to help, we encourage you to support the following organizations: Los Angeles Fire Department, California Fire Foundation, American Red Cross
You can also support fire victims by purchasing Malibu Strong merchandise from the 2018 fire recovery. These items were boxed & tucked away, never intended to be sold again, but we’re bringing them back to help support those in need during this time of crisis. All net proceeds will go toward ongoing relief efforts and to support The American Red Cross.
Malibu Strong represents resilience, unity, and collective strength - how we rise together after hardship and rebuild not just structures, but our community and way of life. Los Angeles has faced challenges before and emerged stronger each time. With your support, the City of Angels will rise again.
Believe,
Malibu Dana

🔥 Rebuilding After the #LAFires 🔥
This week, I’ve been part of 10+ meetings focused on recovery efforts after the devastating LA fires, and I want to share a few crucial insights with you:
1️⃣ Watch Your Fundraising Language
If you're launching a GoFundMe or similar campaign, choose your words carefully. Terms like “rebuilding our home” can signal to FEMA and insurance companies that those funds are replacement capital, potentially reducing your relief or compensation. Let’s ensure these campaigns help families cover ALL their needs without unintended penalties. Especially important information to pass on to those campaigns we're supporting.
2️⃣ Communities First
The message from impacted neighborhoods is clear: homeowners need the first shot at rebuilding before developers step in. Whether it’s affluent areas or working-class communities, people are calling for moratoriums on large-scale development to protect their ability to recover and rebuild their lives.
3️⃣ Beware of Predatory Practices
Tragedy brings out both the best and worst in people. Scammers are circling. From calls to eliminate permitting altogether to suggestions of licensing unqualified contractors, there’s a push for shortcuts that could hurt homeowners in the long run. Instead, we should focus on real solutions like hiring more plan checkers and using pre-approved plans to speed up the process without sacrificing quality.
4️⃣ LA’s Resilient Spirit
Despite the tragedy, one thing is abundantly clear: Los Angeles is united. I’ve witnessed incredible solidarity as people from every neighborhood step up to help those affected. As Jack Kornfield said, “Tend to the part of the garden you can touch.” Right now, LA is tending to its garden—together. 🌱
🚨 Let’s Collaborate! 🚨
I’m joining a few more calls this week, and I’d love to host a discussion with real estate and construction professionals. If you’re interested in shaping the recovery process and ensuring a fair rebuild, drop me a PM with your contact info, and I’ll send you an invite.
Together, we can rebuild smarter, faster, and stronger. 💪

Despite the significant benefits, many Michiganders face significant hurdles in becoming homeowners. One major challenge is rising home prices coupled with stagnant wages. This fact alone leaves many low- and moderate-income families priced out of the market, especially in urban areas.
This is why we rely on efficient building methods, modest house sizes, and nonprofit loans to keep costs low and make Habitat homes affordable for low- to moderate-income families.
Together, Habitat for Humanity of Michigan and our affiliates are paving the way for more Michiganders to experience the joys and security of owning their own homes.
