This is an incredibly important read for anyone working with or on behalf of young people. These issues are systemic and not the sole responsibility of schools. Only by working together with Central Government, inspectorates, MATs, LA’s, health, Police and voluntary sector colleagues can any sustainable progress be made. This is a UK wide issue and most certainly an issue across the NW, as I am in touch regularly with colleagues seeking to find solutions and ways forward to best (or better) meet needs. Whilst it was nice for Rochdale to be included as a case study, we are under no illusion about the journey. We have much more to achieve together, having challenges in Rochdale, like many other areas. I have been very grateful for the commitment and effort from MAT CEO’s, Headteachers, LA colleagues to get around the table this last two weeks and have open, honest dialogue about what we can do together to tackle this. Leaving blame at the door and attempting to tackle this issue systemically and without ego is how we have tried to frame this, focusing on needs and outcomes. We have more to change and adapt to get to where we need to be and yet remain confident that we will only make genuine progress via collaboration. However, consideration of the wider and nationally focused system issues need further development and thoughtfulness if longer-term the landscape is to improve. #raisingrochdale #relationships #righttosucceed #collaborativeadvantage #inclusion #hope

It was great to be at the Local Government Association in London today with National Youth Agency discussing our contributions to the Peer Review Pilots for Youth Work. It was good be having strategic dialogue about Youth Work and the importance of it. As I said today, you are not a youth worker if you call yourself one. It is a profession, with a professional qualification. We thought it was important for Rochdale Borough Council to be there today as youth work has been championed and prioritised in the Borough. Rochdale Youth Service have benefited from strong political and strategic support. We were pleased to be invited to share our experiences and reflections with national colleagues and also take learning away from the sector too. Conversations like today are important and even if an area is starting again, there is support, a framework and professional expertise to help build. It can’t run without resources and clearly further consideration is needed nationally. It’s not easy. Whilst crucially important, it’s not just resources, it’s more understanding of the impact youth work can have, more Higher Education routes and greater recognition of the profession at all levels. All possible. It was energising to hear from Department for Culture, Media and Sport colleagues about their understanding and championing of youth work. The next chapters may just be a little more hopeful.
