Today, we join our partners at the Canadian Association of Social Workers/ L'Association canadienne des travailleurs sociaux in recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and committing to supporting our team and our members in continued learning, reflection and action to advance reconciliation in our work, our practice and our communities.
September 30 is The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is dedicated to honoring the Indigenous children who were forcibly removed from their families and communities through the residential school system, as well as recognizing the experiences of their families and communities. It serves as a reminder of the horrific experiences endured by many Indigenous people in these institutions, and the ongoing harm and impacts of residential schools. Engaging in this day of reflection, education, and action allows us to contribute meaningfully to reconciliation. We encourage all social workers to participate in community events, amplify Indigenous voices, and take time to educate themselves and others about the history and ongoing impact of the residential school system.
