Taking 9,000 to 10,000 steps daily may counteract risk of death and cardiovascular disease in highly sedentary people Have we emerged from the post-COVID-19 period less active? If you have, then this article is certainly for you. In this recent paper, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, scientists looked at how people who spend their days sitting can counter their health risks. After taking into account other potentially influential factors, the authors calculated that the optimal number of steps per day to counteract high sedentary time was between 9,000 to 10,000 steps/day, which lowered mortality risk by 39% and incident CVD risk by 21. #Movingmindz #shanebilsborough https://lnkd.in/gZnRRFFH

The concept of "doctor shopping" in obesity care is real. And the reasons behind it are explained nicely by Yoni Freedhoff in his latest Medscape piece. Bias180 #obesitycare #bias #stigma #personcenteredcare
Yoni Freedhoff on how some pockets of medicine are only now waking up to the concept of treating people living with #obesity as – are you sitting down? – people living with a chronic disease who therefore deserve evidence-based care. Proof that, although there may be signs that the dawn of a new day is close, the big sleep is far from over. https://lnkd.in/grdD6pwp

As the largest respiratory muscle, the diaphragm has a very important function essential in having good lung volume to take deep breaths and have an effective cough. When the diaphragm isn’t working properly, this can lead to diaphragmatic dysfunction and impaired airway clearance, making it harder to breathe with weakened muscle strength. Every April 17th is World Hemophilia Day—a day to recognise the worldwide incidence of haemophilia, von Willebrand disease and other inherited bleeding disorders. These bleeding disorders are rare health conditions where a person’s blood doesn’t clot properly. This can happen because there are not enough of particular proteins or essential clotting factors in the blood, or because these proteins don’t work the way they should. Like most biochemical pathways, we take for granted the incredible cascade of essential changes in our blood when we experience a simple cut. These bleeding disorders occur as part of the clotting pathway and homeostasis. With the exception of some very rare autoimmune disorders, bleeding disorders are not diseases or something you can 'catch'. People with genetic or inherited bleeding disorders are born with them, and they are lifelong conditions. Bruising easily, more painful swelling, bruising, and bleeding for longer after an injury than you would expect. Prolonged bleeding after medical, surgical or dental procedures Internal bleeding into muscles, joints, and organs Heavy and/or prolonged menstrual periods in females; Heavy or prolonged bleeding after childbirth. Thankfully, there are specialised treatments to help blood clot normally, which typically involve factor replacement therapy. This is typically injected into a vein, either ‘on demand’ to stop bleeding or as ‘prophylaxis’, up to 4 times per week to prevent or reduce bleeding. There is currently no cure, however research is looking promising. Supported locally in Australia by the Haemophillia Foundation of Australia. World Haemophilia Day was started in 1989 by the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH), which chose 17 April as the day to bring the community together in honour of WFH founder Frank Schnabel’s birthday.
