At a conference, Dr. Ed Breitschwerdt found himself sharing breakfast with renowned researcher Dr. Russel Regnery. During their casual conversation, he inquired about the difficulty of isolating Bartonella bacteria. Russ's response was game-changing: "Ed, if you can catch three feral cats in Raleigh, you're likely to get one isolate." For someone used to the challenges of isolating other pathogens like Rickettsia and Ehrlichia, this was a pivotal moment. It sparked Dr. Breitschwerdt's journey into Bartonella research, simply starting by investigating bacteria in cats way back in 1992. The moral of the story? Groundbreaking scientific discoveries can often stem from informal chats and unexpected encounters. So keep an open mind and embrace those serendipitous moments! I’m thrilled to share my first contribution for the scientific community with a review article entitled “α-Pyrrolidinohexanophenone (α-PHP) and α-Pyrrolidinoisohexanophenone (α-PiHP): A Review”. It compiles the most recent information about the two synthetic cathinones, α-PHP and α-PiHP, which are New Psychoactive Substances (NPSs) used and abused around the world. This review focuses on the current situation worldwide, chemical properties and toxicological aspects of the two pyrovalerone derivatives. Additionally, it explores the adverse effects on public health due to their consumption.
