It’s an honor to be selected to be selected to be part of the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) Direct-to-Patient Working Group. I am looking forward to contributing my insights to create guidelines on how to build responsible AI for healthcare. CHAI received 1000s of applicants in the public-facing call for nominations. Selection to join this working group was based on a rigorous process that considered a variety of criteria to ensure a diverse and knowledgeable group. This working group is the first ‘sector-specific’ working group, which is launching simultaneously with Generative AI and Predictive AI technical groups, as the patient voice is paramount to CHAI’s mission. CHAI is a community of health systems, public and private organizations, academia, patient advocacy groups, and expert practitioners of AI and data science that came together to harmonize standards and reporting for health AI and educate end users on how to evaluate efficacy and safe integration of these technologies into health care settings before adoption. Members of the AI Working Groups play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare AI. #healthcare #AI

Yesterdays conference on the priorities for an AI in Healthcare Strategy by The Health Foundation was pragmatic and enlightening. Summary below for all those interested. They suggested there were four main areas of healthcare that AI could revolutionise: - Science and Discovery - Medical Discovery - Service Transformation - Population Health So far, too much effort has gone on the first two, where as the opportunity to make a significant short term impact would be in service transformation and population health. They propose 6 key elements to an AI in healthcare strategy: 1: AI should be shaped by public, patients, and healthcare staff. - To prevent bias, co-creation is key - Need to gain patient trust in privacy and data quality 2: Focus on the right areas. - Target the areas where you can make the most immediate impact. Things like operations and admin - The innovation is being driven by industry and some of this is wide of the mark - The NHS needs to provide clearer demand signals so industry can deliver solutions that are relevant 3: Data and digital infrastructure. - Need a strategy for how we collect, manage and provide data for AIs to ingest and learn from - At the moment AI in healthcare is un-equitable and fragmented. National strategies need to achieve inter-operability and create the right infrastructure for this to happen 4: Testing and evaluation. - Conventional evaluation of effectiveness is not fit for purpose. It's too slow and doesn't account for algorithms that adapt post implementation. A new approach is needed - The NHS needs to continue the good work in delivering beta launches, and not be too centralising 5: Clear, concise regulatory regime. - Regulation needs to be dynamic and responsive to drive innovation 6: Workforce capabilities. - Never forget that without investing in great, knowledgable people none of the benefits of AI will be passed on to patients - We need to build the skills to use AI effectively and allow staff to specialise #ai #healthcareai #nhsaistrategy #healthcare #digitalhealth

Are you excited about AI's potential in healthcare? Let's talk reality vs. hype! As someone deeply entrenched in the field, I've observed a gap between the buzz surrounding AI and its integration into clinical workflows. Recent research, like the article "Artificial Intelligence Applications in Health Care Practice: Scoping Review," echoes this sentiment, highlighting the disconnect between conceptual promises and practical implementation. Despite the buzz, genuine AI-driven systems seem elusive, and disruptive changes remain scarce. Many AI-driven commercial systems flood the market, but their accessibility and realistic integration into existing clinical workflows remain uncertain. Let's explore how we can bridge this gap and realize AI's transformative potential together. I invite you to join the conversation, share your insights, and connect with me. Leave your thoughts in the comments below, and let's ignite a discussion that moves us toward actionable solutions. Together, we can shape the future of healthcare!
