What does this mean in the case of a young Electrical Engineering graduate like myself. I didn't wait for a destiny helper, while in the faculty I was crystal clear about the following; ✅ No one owes me anything, this limited my level of disappointment in and out of the faculty ✅ How can I put into practice what I learned in the faculty for the benefits of the common person around me? I started doing domestic electrification and maintenance in my local community. I identified and corrected faults due to poor installations and usage of low quality materials ✅ I went further to learn and started #CCTV cameras installation in order to improve the security level of most businesses and public areas in my locality ✅ I went further to carry out PV installation inorder to help combat the constant issues of power outages which is very common in our localities. ✅ All this got me occupied and prepared me for better opportunities ahead. It also spared me from being idle, which could lead to joining bad gangs for an easier way to make money. ✅ Doing all of this, I was very conscious of my training in the faculty, striving to validate all my courses with distinction. All the fields being related, got me always to have something doing. If I'm not electrifying a home, I'm installing security cameras or I'm designing a mini solar system for a client. ✅ Finally, a big opportunity came knocking and I was prepared for it. Having the privilege to start a career in the #Transmissionlines field with a highly reputable company #LarsenandToubro In summary, be in a constant quest to solve common problems and tailor your services towards it and remain consistent. Last week I finished instructing several local technicians that devoted 24 hours of their time across 3 weeks with me at HVCC. It was a series of courses sponsored by SUNY and HVCC workforce development. We discussed: EV safety and PPE for EV technicians Electrical fundamentals for automotive technicians Basic lab scope functions and tests. Hands down my favorite one to teach is the electrical fundamentals class. It blows me away how many professional automotive technicians have NEVER been properly trained with electrical fundamentals such as: ohms law, circuit laws, voltage drop, circuit design and so on. I like this course so much because even the most seasoned tech realizes that they did not truly understand electricity. Once they are taught the laws and theories, it gives them a whole new prospective. These courses included a hands on portion. During this we performed some HV disconnects and zero volt tests. We located several electrical faults and even learned how to properly perform voltage drops. Then for the last 2 nights we worked with oscilloscopes. Some students brought their own tools but we focused mostly on the automotive Picoscope. They can all confidently hook up scope to a circuit and begin to at least read some electrical signals. After the holidays I’m going to try to run at least 2 more subjects including a deep dive into wiring diagrams and vehicle communication systems. Upskilling, retraining, skills acquisition, CPD and professional learning are common themes in the work we're doing to support the Scottish Economy to capitalise on the opportunities which Net Zero policies present. We recognise the need to take a whole system approach, looking at school pupils, their parents, teachers and support networks, colleges, universities and the students and staff in both, careers guidance networks and the existing adult workforce, to bring everyone with us on the road to Net Zero. Through their work with ESP (Energy Skills Partnership) and Transport Scotland, Glasgow Clyde College are offering this City & Guilds (2921-34) Requirements for the Design and Installation of Domestic and Small Commercial Electric Vehicle Charging Installation course, for qualified electricians who want to step into the #EV infrastructure industry. If we are to achieve the 300,000 EV charge point target set by the Government for 2030 and to ensure infrastructure is deployed at pace to keep up with the sales targets in the ZEV Mandate, we need to train and upskill a considerable volume of skilled electric vehicle technicians to deploy and maintain that infrastructure. What advice do you have for someone starting their career as an electrical engineer? ✏️ Focus on your ultimate goal and start with spirit, hard work, and confidence, which will lead you to your desired position.

Electrical engineers are in very high demand at the moment due to the whole world pushing towards decarbonisation and more energy security. In the UK alone, engineering skills shortage costs the UK economy £1.5bn per year. This means more opportunities for growth for engineers, better opportunities offering the work-life balance and of course higher benefits and pay. Not to mention the fulfilment on the job working on meaningful projects that help the community. Now is the time to plan for your career in electrical engineering.

A huge thanks to to tonight's panel of experienced Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau electrical chartership assessors, Greig Blackler, Robert Moore, Kathryn Ward, and Fiona Lim for making the time this evening to share their knowledge with our Engineering NZ Electrical Engineering Group members on the chartership process. As always there were some great questions asked both in the room and online, which were superbly answered by the panel! Key points were: 👉 Consider applying once you have 4 to 5 years experience. 👉 Reach out for a mentor or somebody who was recently chartered. 👉 Choose 4 good work examples which demonstrate all criteria. 👉 With your CPD records in place, and 4 good work examples selected, it will take in the order of 40 hours to complete your application. With 13 people attending in person with another 42 watching online there was clearly still plenty of electrical engineers wanting to get chartered! As always a big thanks Henry Cassin, Gabriella Wilson and the team at Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau for doing their magic behind the scenes to make these events the success they are! #GetChartered

A PIECE OF ADVICE TO YOUNG GRADUATE ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS If you are a recent graduate electrical engineer who has applied to any Graduate Development Program (or still searching for a job) and in your course of GDP Program you don't want to be placed and work permanently in other department (Safety, Production, Quality Control, etc ..) but want to become an electrical engineer in Maintenance and Engineering Department, I suggest you work as a simple electrician first. Get a multimeter and work along with electricians. Connect and troubleshoot basic Motor Control Circuits/Control Circuits (DOL, Star-Delta, Reverse-Forward, ATS,...). There will be the fear/risk of dealing with live wires (but you chose electrical engineering at first place so no choice😊) but always be sure of what you are doing. If you are not sure, ask questions to senior electricians or google it. Asking won't hurt but doing something you are not sure will hurt. If you follow my advice, you will have hands-on field experience plus theoretical knowledge and after two or three years, you will thank me for that. #Live_wires #Electricity #Power
