The Business Hub is BACK (after covid) Shanghai 🌆 is often seen as the business heart of Asia due to its strategic position in global trade and finance. Home to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, one of the world’s largest by market capitalization, the city attracts multinational corporations and has become a central stage for international business negotiations and financial transactions. #Tech : 👨💻 As a tech-advanced city, Shanghai is at the cutting edge of various technological sectors including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy. The city fosters a vibrant startup ecosystem supported by both the government and private sector, aimed at driving innovation and technological breakthroughs. 🇨🇳Pinch Me Moments in Shanghai 🇨🇳 This week, I've been living a series of pinch-me moments. I'm writing from Shanghai, where our APAC workplace off-site has been excellent in grounding ourselves into the present and planning for the strategic needs of the business. Even though I consider myself well-traveled, this is my first time in China, and it has exceeded all my expectations. Firstly, the value of face-to-face interaction with my team cannot be overstated. We've immersed ourselves in global workplace objectives, tailoring them to fit our regional and personal priorities. This clarity and understanding, especially as we move into the new financial year and a new contract with JLL, it's been priceless. A massive thanks to Derrick and Terence for making this happen, and to Tina for hosting and enabling us to see and experience so much! Secondly, experiencing a place I've only read about has been profound. Growing up in the UK, my perception of China was heavily influenced by negative narratives. However, my time here has been the complete opposite of what I expected. Shanghai is a fascinating blend of the ultra-modern and the deeply historical, like something straight out of "The Jetsons" mixed with stunning ancient architecture, and the care and respect for balance both personally and spiritually. The culture, history, and people of China have taught me so much, challenging my biases and enriching my understanding. It's been a privilege to learn and immerse myself in this beautiful culture and have some of the experiences this country offers. This journey has reminded me of the importance of staying open to the unexpected and embracing the unfamiliar. Whether through connecting with colleagues or exploring a new city, these moments of discovery are what make life truly magical. Here's to more pinch-me moments and the serendipity they bring! These experiences have reinforced the value of purpose and connection in both my professional and personal life. It's a reminder that stepping out of our comfort zones can lead to the most rewarding insights and growth. From Artifacts to Innovation and what not : Insights from Singapore's History As soon as I stepped into the Singapore National Museum, the air seemed to hum with the weight of history and culture. Walking through the exhibits, I marveled at the ancient artifacts and relics from Singapore's early days as a fishing village. The interactive displays and multimedia presentations brought the history to life, making me feel as if I was witnessing the birth of the city-state firsthand. A section of display narrated stories of hawker stalls and family recipes passed down through generations, highlighting the diversity and unity in Singapore's food culture. The bold, thought-provoking pieces challenged my perceptions and sparked deep reflections on current social issues. The museum's displays of struggle and triumph teach us about #resilience. From historical battles to personal narratives of survival, these stories remind leaders of the importance of resilience In the midst of my exploration, I took a break at the museum's café, sipping on a perfectly brewed coffee while soaking in the serene courtyard view. The ambiance was perfect for a moment of reflection, allowing me to digest the wealth of knowledge and experiences I had encountered. From ancient artifacts to modern innovations, the Singapore National Museum offers timeless lessons in #adaptability, cultural awareness, #innovation, #collaboration, and continuous learning for leaders. Why ? 🏣 Shanghai stands as a towering symbol of China’s rapid economic progress Known as the "Pearl of the Orient," this city seamlessly blends its rich heritage with its status as a modern financial and business hub. Here are some key aspects that cement Shanghai’s reputation as the business capital of China: 🚄 Global Financial Center: #Shanghai is home to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, one of the world’s largest by market capitalization, attracting both domestic and international businesses. Lujiazui area in Pudong is often compared to Wall Street, featuring a skyline dominated by skyscrapers housing major banks, financial institutions, and multinational corporations. 🏙 Advanced Infrastructure: Shanghai boasts world-class infrastructure, including modern transport networks such as Shanghai Pudong International Airport, extensive metro and bus systems, and constantly improving roadways. These facilities support both domestic and international business operations efficiently. 👫 Talent and Educational Resources: The city is an educational hub with several top Chinese universities and research institutions that produce a steady stream of skilled graduates. This rich talent pool is essential for businesses, especially in fields like finance, technology, and biopharmaceuticals. Startup center: Shanghai’s local government actively supports business and economic development through favorable policies, including tax incentives, subsidies for key industries, and support for innovation and startup Shanghai, best nightlife ever? 😉

Week 10 of 10. We have marked our 10th Anniversary in Hong Kong with a series of projects completed throughout the decade. We wish to thank our clients for their trust in us, our collaborators in delivering each of these projects with us and our people for their passion and dedication. Without whom we could have not done the work we do. There are many other projects that were not included but which are just as important to our journey. Our post pandemic world is without doubt different. Perception is reality. The forced adoption of digital tools and technology has enabled seamless teamwork across continents allowing us to work with our expanded #Okana family.   I have reflected on the here and now and the continuing slowdown in growth in the country’s economy. As China struggles to work out what to do with an oversupply of built assets and the distress caused to the investment market, alongside a shrinking and aging demography. From retail malls to residential towers and commercial office buildings. Location, location, location continues to be a factor in a place’s socioeconomic success from the micro level to macro level. People’s choices are informed by the quality of the environment, opportunities, community, safety and lifestyles available. Having binge watched how less than 1% of humanity lives through one of Netflix’s window on the world series 'Buying Los Angles', certain places thrive because of these factors. Placemaking and the associated quality of life. As cities continue to attract people due to the access to opportunities and services, they continually evolve to improve the perceived quality of life. However, they become overcrowded and subsequently fail. Resulting in no go areas and ghettos. The rebirth of places rests with its leaders. communities and creatives to recognize the onset of decay, listen to the people’s needs and define solutions that will support sustainable reuse, repurposing and regrowth. As stated previously I am unsure how the Northern Metropolis being promoted in Hong Kong embodies a futuristic vision for a new district, I do wonder whether it will just be more of the same, missing the once in a century opportunity to reposition Honk Kong as Asia's most attractive and livable city. With this people’s choices are eased.   The needs of people are in many ways consistent; however, they do change as we age and journey through life. We all recognize one day that life is short, we need to ensure we can all enjoy the gift of life equitably.
