Enhancing Efficiency at Nigerian Ports: P&H Nova Group’s Call to Action P&H Nova Group, a key player in Nigeria’s maritime industry, is advocating for regular training for stevedores and significant upgrades to port handling equipment. During a recent staff training program, Prince Hillary Anekwe, Chairman of P&H Nova, emphasized the need for continuous skill enhancement and better equipment to boost the efficiency and competitiveness of Nigerian ports. The event, “Effective Maritime Personnel Operations Workshop,” hosted by P&H Nova in collaboration with the Ports and Terminal Management Academy of Nigeria (POTMAN), highlighted the importance of well-informed and trained port workers. Prince Hillary stressed, “At P&H Nova, we ensure our staff fully understand our operations—not just their roles. This is crucial for overall efficiency.” P&H Nova Group, known for supplying top-tier handling equipment and PPE, also prioritizes safety. Prince Hillary advocated for the mandatory use of PPE in the maritime sector, noting, “Wearing a life jacket can save lives. It should be compulsory for everyone working in maritime.” The discussion also touched on the need for more deep-sea ports in Nigeria to accommodate larger vessels and decentralize maritime activities from Lagos, stimulating economic growth in other regions. Mr. James Kitiya, Regional Managing Director, echoed the call for ongoing training and emphasized the importance of maintaining high-quality equipment. “Even if you’ve been working for 18 years, you need to refresh your skills regularly,” he said, urging ports to prioritize regular maintenance and training. During 2023, Savannah achieved significant progress in enhancing our operational safety. There has been a substantial focus on the identification of specific training needs and the integration of external resources. This is designed to elevate the skill set of our workforce, ensuring a well-prepared and safety-conscious team. Savannah continued its strong health and safety record in 2023 with a zero Lost Time Injury (“LTI”) Rate per 200,000 working hours within its operations. On 11 September 2023, Savannah achieved one million working hours without an LTI across our business operations in Nigeria. This was followed by the achievement, post-year end in May 2024, of two million working hours without an LTI across our business operations in Nigeria. In my recent role at the Ahafo North Project in Sunyani - Ghana, adapting to the changing scope of works, crises recovery in both safety and construction progress has been a key resilience skill everyone within CSI Energy Group is soaking into.
