Just a few days are left to join the Refugee Pride: 365 movement, just like our incredible partners at Airbnb.org! 💚 Our grant partners enable ORAM to protect, empower, and advocate for LGBTIQ refugees worldwide. ORAM first teamed up with Airbnb.org in 2022, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, to provide safe and secure housing for LGBTIQ Ukrainian refugees. Last year alone, ORAM provided over 4,000 nights of safe housing to over 200 LGBTIQ refugees from Ukraine, thanks to Airbnb.org's unwavering support. The success of this short-term housing program was the catalyst for launching an emergency housing initiative for LGBTIQ refugees in Nairobi, Kenya. Thank you to Airbnb.org for your year-round commitment to protecting LGBTIQ refugees and asylum seekers. You, too, can join Airbnb.org to make a lasting difference by joining the Refugee Pride: 365 movement: https://buff.ly/3xrQAqK

Canada's Commitment to Refugees 🌍 Canada has announced plans to welcome 51,615 refugees over the next three years, doubling spaces for human rights defenders. This includes resettlement efforts for religious and ethnic minorities, women and girls in precarious situations, survivors of torture and human trafficking, LGBTQI+ individuals, Rohingya refugees, and human rights defenders. Additionally, Canada has partnered with Rainbow Railroad to protect and welcome at-risk LGBTQI+ individuals and their families. The country has set multi-year resettlement commitments, including resettling 10,000 refugees from Africa and 8,000 refugees from the Middle East by the end of 2022–2023. Canada has also committed to resettling up to 4,000 refugees from the Americas by 2028 and welcoming 15,000 migrants on a humanitarian basis from the Western Hemisphere. #Canada #Refugees #HumanRights #LGBTQI+ #RainbowRailroad #Resettlement #GlobalCommunity #HumanitarianAid #WelcomeRefugees #Diversity #Inclusion #Compassion #Empathy #SupportRefugees #StandWithRefugees #RefugeeRights #Community #TogetherStronger #CanadaWelcomesRefugees #CanadaCares #CanadaStrong #CanadaProud 🤗 ✨ 🎉 🎊 https://lnkd.in/eMy6WRGR

"This year, World Refugee Day (20 June) focuses on solidarity with refugees – for a world where refugees are welcomed. Refugees need our solidarity now more than ever. Solidarity means keeping our doors open, celebrating their strengths and achievements, and reflecting on the challenges they face. Solidarity with people forced to flee also means finding solutions to their plight – ending conflicts so they can return home in safety, ensuring they have opportunities to thrive in the communities that have welcomed them, and providing countries with the resources they need to include and support refugees." -UNHCR Pictured below is the thank-you bouquet I received this morning for talking about the work we do at FIZ Advocacy and Counselling Services for Migrant Women, providing them with safehousing, information, legal services and a new perspective. The figures in our recently published annual report show that last year most FIZ clients affected by trafficking were referred within the scope of seeking asylum in Switzerland. Information on how each of us individuals can show solidarity #WithRefugees can be found on this official page: https://lnkd.in/dFiqFWdX Currently there are more people seeking refuge than ever recorded. If you're interested in the numbers you can look them up here: https://lnkd.in/dbRgdPwu.

Reflecting on World Refugee Day yesterday, we honour those who have been forced to flee. Everyone deserves safety, and we advocate for the rights of all refugees worldwide to protection, welcome and support to live free and fulfilling lives. 1 in 3 refugee and migrant women living in Australia have experienced family violence, and those on temporary visas report higher levels of abuse. At Safe and Equal, we acknowledge that stopping this violence means addressing racism and discrimination based on myths and misconceptions about cultural differences in this country. This year's theme is "Solidarity with Refugees” and includes an emphasis on inclusive and equitable care for refugees worldwide. In line with this, we support and advocate strongly for the work of our specialist family violence services that provide culturally-safe in-language and in-culture support for refugee and migrant women, and those organisations working with and for refugee and migrant women to prevent violence. If you can, please consider donating today. inTouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence Multicultural Centre for Women's Health Australian Muslim Women's Centre for Human Rights Wellsprings for Women

Publication: Developing safe and legal pathways for LGBTQI+ refugees in Europe: an overview of the situation in France, Germany and Italy. As part of its work on legal pathways for refugees, Synergies migrations published a new report on legal pathways for LGBTQI+ refugees in three European countries: France, Germany and Italy. Compared to Canada and USA where tailored resettlement and community sponsorship programmes are implemented for LGBTQI+ refugees, European practices are much less developed. However, considering their specific vulnerabilities, LGBTQI+ refugees are usually included in existing resettlement and humanitarian corridors schemes but little has been done so far to adjust the procedures to better reach out, protect and welcome theses refugees. Some promising practices may pave the way for the future though. The report is now available in English here: https://lnkd.in/eap6JVER

Alongside the many thousands of refugees who have returned to Côte d’Ivoire are increasing numbers of migrants, choosing to return after an unsuccessful journey to Europe or time spent in a third country. Many returning migrants have experienced extreme rights violations during their journeys, with services to address their trauma not widely available in communities of return. Those who were unsuccessful in their migration and return with debt often face considerable stigma and exclusion. In 2023, ICMC and the Episcopal Sub-Commission for Migrants, Tourism, the Apostolate of the Sea and People on the Move, part of ICMC’s member the Episcopal Commission for Migrants in Côte d’Ivoire, worked together with local churches to provide psychosocial assistance and economic reintegration support for vulnerable young migrants in Côte d’Ivoire. An ICMC-supported collaboration with government-run social centers supported returned migrant youth to reintegrate within their families, and engaged families to act as foster carers for those without family support. Read more about how ICMC is supporting member actions to build safe, dignified and sustainable return and reintegration, in Côte d'Ivoire and around the world. #ReturnWithHope #StandWithRefugees https://bit.ly/4fViixu Photo: Boonekamp/ICMC, 2023

#WorldRefugeeDay This World Refugee Day, I wish to celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. But more than that, I want to do two things. Firstly, highlight that celebrating the strength of refugees is not enough. I call for: - Safe routes for refugees to seek sanctuary - Prosecute trafficking gangs who exploit refugees - Governments to actively fight against Xenophobia and discrimination (racial, ethnic) and develop policies of refugee integration and inclusion - Increased funding and support for people stuck in conflict-stricken zones so that refugees don't have to flee their countries - International community to come together to support refugees - pathways are open for government, private, and 3P sector. All it takes is willingness and an innovative strand of thought of how refugees can best benefit them - socially, politically, or economically. Secondly, I want to thank the Afghanistan and Central Asian Association (ACAA) and Dr. Nooralhaq Nasimi MBE, for giving me an opportunity for the past 2 years to help me make a valuable contribution to improve refugee integration in the UK, helping refugee women and girls from Afghanistan and Central Asia access practical support and other services. This World Refugee Day, let's take a step back and think, what support we would expect from others if only we were fleeing persecution?

Today is World Refugee Day, and this year's theme is "Solidarity with Refugees." The first World Refugee Day was held in 2001, on the 50th anniversary of the UN's 1951 Refugee Convention. According to data collected by UNHCR, one in every 69 people in the world are displaced, double the number of people who were displaced ten years ago (https://lnkd.in/egu_vx8j). How can you show solidarity with displaced peoples this World Refugee Day? 🧩 GET INVOLVED: Find out if there are community groups or organisations supporting refugees where you live. Volunteer to help out or donate to these groups! Examples include: joining Fáilte Isteach (https://lnkd.in/eqt78KVe, locations all over Ireland) and conversing with refugees, joining a community kitchen or donating to one like Cooking for Freedom (https://lnkd.in/eAzcJ5xM), or volunteer with an organisation like Doras (doras.org) which protects migrant rights. 📖 LEARN: Educate yourself on the root causes of displacement and which countries are the most affected. Learn about historical migration crises. Listen to stories from people who have experienced displacement, whether by reading books, watching films, listening to music and podcasts, or having a conversation. 📣 ADVOCATE: In Ireland and across Europe we've seen an increase in right-wing sentiment and violence, often directed towards refugees. Combat harmful narratives by sharing refugee stories and speaking up when you hear someone stereotyping or denigrating refugees. Protest governmental action that harms refugees, such as the removal of tents and construction of fences along Grand Canal in Dublin.

Refugees and migrants going home? This is worth knowing. Discussions of refugees and migrants tend to focus on their leaving home ... and rightly so. But so many return to their homes each year when conditions allow. Indeed when people leave their homes they mostly hope to return. Still, returning home may not be as easy as it seems. This brief article on ensuring returnees a safe, sustainable and dignified return tells a powerful story. For a look at this important, but often unknown transition, look below. It really is worth knowing... for my own part, it's impossible to avert my gaze.
