Last night I watched an old episode of Black Mirror for the first time (it came out in 2016 🫣) – and thought of an interesting hypothetical. First, its premise: you can upload your mind to the cloud. In the episode, it was mostly used for extending your existence beyond the end of your natural life. But if this technology really existed, it would undoubtedly be used by people in many other contexts as well. Here’s the hypothetical: You are an expert in your field, with very high demand for your skills. Would you be willing to sell your expertise, in the form of a virtual copy of your mind? 

As 2023 soon comes to a close I like to do some reflection on what I did good and bad. The great thing about 2023 is that I laid my Cloud Computing foundation and made some great connections. In 2024 I look to build on top of that foundation and take that step to the next level.

I have just finished reading 📖 this book so highly recommended.

Fascinating work from Tiemo. For cloud-scale optimization problems (e.g. storage placement) he builds an "oracle" offline, which precomputes *correct* answers to decision problems online! No AI_style prediction or hallucination, just convex optimization, cleverly done. (And no, I haven't combed the camera-read version for easter eggs but boy did we get into the details together on earlier drafts!)
