Founder of Remote Paralegal Solutions, LLC | Multifaceted and experienced paralegal specializing in document preparation and full-service attorney support.
5 Things You Should Know Before Becoming a Paralegal: 1. You need to have an open mind, especially when it comes to your specialty. Some may say it is important to know what area you want to work in, but you should not rely on that as your only option. It is great to land a job in the area you were hoping for, but you may be pleasantly surprised working in an area you never considered before. Upon graduation, I knew I wanted to work in family law. The first firm I worked for was a large firm in North Carolina and they practiced almost every type of law you can imagine. I had no idea what area I was interviewing for, but I knew it was an awesome opportunity as a new paralegal graduate. At the time I knew there were two areas of law I had absolutely no interest in: real estate and bankruptcy. Any idea what department I was hired for? YEP! Real estate! And I absolutely fell in love with it, and I quickly found out that I was exceptionally good at it. I would have never known my potential in that area of law if I never had an open mind about it. I did end up leaving a few years later to join a family law firm, but that experience was incredible, and I ended up using that experience to help the family law firm start their real estate practice as well! Never say never! 2. Learn your attorney’s quirks. Typically, no matter what the task, every attorney does it differently and expects you to do it a certain way as well. Learn how each of your attorneys likes things done and do so accordingly. You will make their job so much easier, and they will know they can trust you and count on you. This is invaluable. 3. The level of client interaction varies. Whether you interact with clients depends on the law firm you work for and how they are set up. Some firms, even in the same area of law, may not have as much face time with clients as others may have. Be prepared for either situation. The level of interaction is also client dependent. You may work at a firm that does not have much face time with clients generally, but there is almost always that one client… IFYKYK. 4. You must speak up when you make a mistake ASAP. Be upfront and honest. We are human. We make mistakes. The longer you wait to mention a mistake, the worse the outcome may be for you, the attorney, the client, etc. This will also build trust with your attorney and any others you work with. 5. You may or may not be the only paralegal at the firm. If you are the only one, you have no need to worry. With such a huge paralegal community, you will never be alone! Talk with fellow paralegals, whether they are colleagues, former coworkers, fellow alumni from your degree program, connections on LinkedIn, etc. You will not know everything asked of you in every role. Use your resources for your benefit. I promise their knowledge is beyond helpful. #paralegalsupport #paralegalcommunity #paralegals #remoteparalegals

At The Family Law Company by Hartnell Chanot we believe in the power of our values to shape our professional journey and foster a positive impact on the families we serve. Our core values are not just words; they are the guiding principles that steer us through every case and interaction. Bravery in Action! We are brave. This isn't just a statement; it's a commitment to action. We listen attentively, think critically, and then act decisively. In the world of family law, courage is about leaning into difficult conversations, adapting to meet the unique needs of our clients and colleagues, and not shying away from challenging ourselves and others. It also reinforces our commitment to standing up for the vulnerable and access to justice. Why are values important? They are the compass that guides our actions and decisions. In the realm of family law, where the emotional and personal stakes are high, having a strong set of values ensures that we approach each case with empathy, integrity, and a deep commitment to justice. As we continue to grow and evolve, our values remain our bedrock. They remind us of our mission: to be the pre-eminent family law company, not just through our legal expertise, but through a steadfast dedication to our ethos. Together, we are more than just a team; we are a force for good, championing a positive future for families across the country and overseas. We are always looking for likeminded individuals to join us in our journey and help us make a difference, one family at a time. #FamilyLaw #CoreValues #MakingADifference

When I started Modern Family law in 2017, we had 4 associates and 2 paralegals. It was one month after I bought out my former partner and the firm was struggling to keep its head above water. My vision was to expand, grow and provide innovative, client-focused services for today’s families. It was a tortious slog for many years. As we look to open our 10th office in Seattle, Washington, in August, Modern Family Law will have almost 50 lawyers and 110-120 employees, across four states by September. Our gross revenues will exceed $25M next year, potentially by a lot. We continue to drive down the cost of legal services while expanding the client base to over 900 open and active cases by year end. Innovation is king in our firm. But I’ve learned growth without drama is impossible. Many factors come into play as a team rapidly expands. Ego, greed, and outside interference are constant foes to long term success. While I wish there was more congeniality in the practice area, protectionism and an unhealthy monopoly still hold the power in our profession, particularly in family law. It is a cutthroat field. For newer lawyers thinking of spinning off their own practice, or thinking of joining a “traditional” firm, I can only say, don’t. I know this is contrary to the LinkedIn mantra of “dream big” but it’s the truth. It’s a brutal, unforgiving world out there and you’ll find no quarter given for creativity and innovation. It’s rare indeed to find true, honest collaboration. Our success is an outlier. I could give you the secret recipe, but it will probably do you no good. It’s the people. Every day I’m thankful for the amazing team we have because I know, without them, I’d be slugging away in a windowless office in traditional firm, hoping one day to sit first chair. I’m a lucky guy.

Aucklands First LLPs Share Their Stories https://lnkd.in/gTDxWMDf <a href=""> - Dave: Welcome, I am Dave Johnson, and I am the CEO of Modern family Law. Modern Family Law is a national law firm with offices in four states, and we focus on modern solutions for today’s families. Here with me today are three actual live LLPs, and we’re very excited to have you guys join us. We have Selena Salinas, who is a Modern Family Law LLP up in Fort Collins, and we have Kris Freeman, who is a Modern Family Law LLP in Auckland Springs, and we have Veronica Gonzalez, who is an LLP with Juniper Law in Manukau South Auckland, if I remember right. Is that right, Veronica. Veronica: Arvada. Dave: Arvada, yeah. Veronica: Yeah. Dave: And we’re excited to have all three of you join us today to talk about the LLP program and how you got where you’re at today. So I want to kick it off with that and talk about the exam and see if this was what you guys expected. How did it feel? Was it what you thought it was going to be? Veronica, you want to start off? Veronica: Well, I didn’t really know what to expect, so I just studied everything I could. Took the classes, had study groups, and I went in there real confident. And it was a breeze, pretty much. I’m not saying it was easy by all means, but I did a lot of studying. So nobody knew what to expect because it was the first exam, so it wasn’t that hard, I guess. I mean, it was, but with all the studying, it was great. Dave: Yeah. What did you think of the questions? Do you think they were fair? Do you think that they were in line with the studying that you did, or were you surprised by them? Veronica: Yeah, they were pretty good. There were a few that I didn’t study for for sure, but like I said, it was the first one. Nobody knew what to study for, nobody knew what to teach. It was just kind of, we were going in there blind with the core competencies, and so we went off of that and studied what we could. But for the most part, a lot of them were within what we do in our practice too. So as a paralegal, we’ve learned a lot of that just by being a paralegal in family law for so long. Dave: Yeah. How about you, Selena? What did you think of the test? Selena: I do agree with Veronica. We didn’t know what we were getting into. We didn’t have an example. I think they gave us three sample questions, but even that wasn’t really a good example of what we saw when we went in there that day. But I had been studying for this for a long time before we took the test, so we were studying for things that weren’t necessarily in the test. So it was good to refresh our minds and our knowledge and sharpen up in some ways. But it was also kind of nerve-wracking, just not knowing, am I studying the right things? Am I going in the right direction? Wh...
