Every year, someone asks me the question, “How can you call it the Cleveland County Free Fair when so many things cost money at the fair?” So much so, that I’ve quit dubbing it the “free fair,” even though that’s exactly what the county fair is. The short answer: There is no charge for parking or entry, and many free events are put on by the Cleveland County Fair Board. For history buffs, it might be fun to explore how our free county fairs came about in Oklahoma. In 1915, Representative Paul Nesbitt of McAlester introduced a bill that allowed county commissions to operate “free fairs” using tax money to cover the event’s expenses. The aim was to create an accessible community event that wouldn’t require entry fees, making it inclusive and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of their financial situation (for a more comprehensive history check out okhistory.org). Over a century later, this tradition continues. The fair offers a wide range of no-cost activities and entertainment, but some attractions, like the carnival and vendor booths, do charge for rides, food and services. Much of the fair is free, however. County residents can enter exhibits or livestock for free, and anyone can participate in many fun contests without any charge. In fact, it’s entirely possible to spend a fun day at the fair without spending any money at all if you bring your own snacks and drinks. Just stick a cooler chest in your car. Don’t worry if you don’t want to walk back and forth to the parking lot. Our fair board members will shuttle you back and forth in golf carts — free of charge, of course! Read the full story below.

Sapience from the Grad 1 The second activity Max participated in yesterday was the fill-in the bottle competition which was between him and another graduand (a female). Both of them appeared ready for the task but one obviously had a better understanding of the goal. The two bottles were kept few meters apart while two buckets filled with water were kept at the opposite far end. A little cup was put in the buckets to enable the contenders fetch some water, then run with it to the other end and pour into their bottles. This was to be repeated until the bottle is filled. At the blow of a whistle, the competition began. The both contenders understood the first instruction -using the cup to fetch from the bucket, run to the other end and pour into the bottle. However, it was glaring that Max didn't understand that whoever fills the bottle first becomes the winner, hence, he poured most of his water away. On the other hand, the girl understood not just the task but the aim and techniques. While Max's bottle was half full, the girl's bottle was full 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 The final whistle made my son realize that a winner had emerged. That not withstanding, I cheered him on (though he already understood that he lost) Sapience: every competition (personal/interpersonal) has rules, timeframe and goals. Understanding these before embarking on competitions will guarantee success.

#throwbackthursday to London Toy Fair 2020! I've now totally lost count of the number of Toy Fair events I've been to, either in London or overseas. Each one has been completely different from the others, with new products, new publicity stunts, and new faces (and plenty of familiar faces too!) at every event. We old-timers know the drill.... stay hydrated, wear comfy shoes, prepare in advance, and stock up on energy bars! I'd love to hear advice from other seasoned #ToyFair professionals - what's the best advice you can offer for newbies at the show?
