⭐ Situated along the historic James River, the City of Lynchburg faced the challenge of meeting its TMDL permit while safeguarding downstream water bodies. As Virginia's largest drinking water supply for 2.7 million people, the James River's significance is crucial. Implementing OptiRTC’s CMAC at Warren Pond, Lynchburg increased runoff residency time, mitigated peak flows, and helped achieve the remaining reductions to meet 100% of annual nutrient reduction targets. This led to improved water quality, enhanced flood mitigation, streamlined nutrient load reduction for permits, a centralized dashboard for real-time, data-driven operations, and automatic control of wet weather discharge from the pond facility. The Fresh Coast Protection Partnership (FCPP) was launched to scale up green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) to meet Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s (MMSD) 2035 goal of capturing the first half inch of rain, or 740 million gallons of water each time it rains. GSI can mitigate flooding, improve water quality, enhance green spaces, and promote sustainable water management practices. The FCPP is a community-based partnership between MMSD and CIS. The program has 18 projects, either completed or in development, that will collectively capture, treat, and store over 11 million gallons of stormwater. The FCPP can assist both private and public landowners in increasing the capacity of stormwater capture projects on their properties at no cost to the landowner and is actively seeking projects in municipalities within MMSD’s service area. Did you know that the City of Jackson, MS Distribution System Assessment released in July 2022 found that water line breaks occur at an average annual rate of 55 breaks per 100 miles of line? This is more than three times the Partnership for Safe Water's recommended limit of 15 breaks per 100 miles. When water lines break, the system loses pressure, and precautionary boil water alerts are issued due to the risk that contaminants have entered the water system. #watermanagement #water #stayinformed
