About us
We are the Environment Agency. We are the biggest and most wide-ranging environmental regulator in Europe. We work with businesses and communities to protect and improve the environment, for people and wildlife. And the need for our work is becoming ever more important. We protect and improve the environment across England to: • reduce the risks to people and properties from flooding • help businesses and communities adapt to climate change • reduce pressures on biodiversity • help businesses to make sure they don’t harm the environment through pollution or taking too much water • issue licences and permits, and take action against people who don’t take their environmental responsibilities seriously. None of this is possible without a multi-talented team of professional and dedicated people. And just like the environment we help to care for, we’re home to an incredible diversity of skills and knowledge. Today, we employ more than 12,000 people throughout England in a wide range of roles. You’ll find leading scientists and prominent geologists alongside public relations professionals, planners and policy advisors. We employ lawyers, enforcement officers and engineers, conservation scientists and marine biologists. And of course we have a wide team of support staff. We employ people at all stages of their career, from recent graduates to experienced leaders and internationally-renowned experts. Almost a fifth of water supplies are lost by water companies before reaching our taps. Our latest report assessing the water companies’ annual performance raises concerns over the industry's efforts to manage water resources efficiently and sustainably. Despite progress being made, our report reveals that some companies are falling behind their own targets that could leave customers and the environment at higher risks during a drought. Water companies must deliver what is in their Water Resource Management Plans, to meet this demand and increase resilience against extreme drought. See the key findings: https://lnkd.in/eN4JhHXq

“Being winter ready isn’t just for winter – it’s a year-round advantage!” Previously, we shared dairy farmer Tom’s story, about improving his farm with better slurry storage capacity. In this video, we explore the agronomics—applying economic principles to optimise farming practices—that support Tom’s improvements. This includes benefits like increased grass yields and how regulation can continue to help farm businesses. Find out more in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eaGhtVcS

From 1 October, Materials Facilities Regulations have changed. The changes mean that existing waste sorting sites are required to carry out more sampling and reporting, and operators will need to submit an updated combined waste return form. Under new regulations, more sites have also been brought into scope. If you’re unsure whether you are a Materials Facilities Operator, you are required by law to check if you are. This week, we’re stepping up efforts to prevent illegal waste exports by inspecting sites handling used electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). Our goal? To ensure no untested equipment is being shipped overseas illegally 🚢 It’s crucial for organizations managing EEE to understand when it becomes waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). This includes: ➡️ Approved authorized treatment facilities ➡️ Designated collection facilities ➡️ Producer compliance schemes ➡️ Organizations preparing EEE for reuse ➡️ Charity shops, retailers handling returns, and waste carriers Get informed about proper classification and handling: https://lnkd.in/gTgkkKPh #WasteCrimeWednesday

Better regulation of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is coming soon.🔌 From 1 January 2025, new codes for WEEE will be in place to ensure that exported and imported WEEE is managed in an environmentally sound manner throughout shipment and during recycling. This is being done to protect human health and the environment. We encourage affected businesses and other parties to review the changes and prepare ahead of time.
