In March of 2020 we had 18 applications for 5 internship positions. On the 13th day of that month, the world stopped. So we hired all 18. All 18 interns had experience in foster care and/or homelessness. Feeling isolated was all too common. With the shutdowns, we knew the feeling of isolation would grow immensely. The internship was an opportunity to stay connected. A job is a powerful opportunity to be connected to a team and a purpose. Because we had more interns than employees, it ended up being an opportunity to keep all of our employees connected through a mentorship program during one of the most isolating times in our country. Businesses have a huge opportunity to increase their social impact by identifying intentional connections with their employees and communities. #socialimpact #connection #community #employeeengagement

in trying to benefit and help our children, have created an environment that is adding to their frustration and angst. I propose a simple solution. Let the kids work for a year as seniors in high school, and have it be integrated into their classroom work. Although internships are great in college, we should be fostering their participation earlier on in life, preferably during high school, an issue which my proposed solution would address.

We can't talk about internships and career development without mentioning the disparity in employment for people on the Autism spectrum. Recent studies indicate that up to 85% of adults with autism are unemployed due to discrimination and a lack of understanding of the unique skill sets that people with autism bring to the workforce.
