Roots & Wings is an incredible non-profit organization dedicated to supporting youth aging out of foster care. The statistics speak for themselves: - More than 1 in 5 will become homeless within 18 months of emancipating. - Almost 50% of inmates in our prison systems have spent time in the foster care system. - Only half of aged-out foster youth obtain their GED or High School diploma by age 19. - Just 6% go on to earn a 2- or 4-year degree. In 2023, Roots & Wings members defied the odds: - 100% have a High School diploma. - 94% were employed. - 88% maintained a savings account. - 81% attended an educational, vocational, or certificate program. It takes a village, and we are so thankful for ours. Together, we make a remarkable impact on vulnerable children and the families caring for them. Friends, families, partners, and supporters— you mean so much to us and you make this work possible. Truly, we couldn’t do this without you. With #GivingTuesday approaching, we asked our champion donors why they choose to support families alongside us, and we consider it a gift to share some of their stories with you. As a foster parent, Angela’s story reminds us of how vital it is for kids and families to feel seen, heard, and cared for from day one. “While we also support larger non-profits, we prefer to donate closer to home with organizations that are change-makers in our own community. Foster the Family provides wrap-around care for children experiencing foster care and the families caring for them. For the child, the exit from their everyday lives is often without warning. Similarly, for the individual or families taking them in, little notice is given, often less than an hour! During an already bumpy transition, most children arrive without necessities like clothing, backpacks, or toiletries. And sure, these may seem like small things, but without feeling comfortable with the small things, it’s difficult to grasp the significance of, let alone focus on, the bigger things – even kids recognize the importance of basic needs and how it makes them feel. FTF has identified this speed bump and made it easier for families and kids to not worry about the small stuff in the early days, and instead focus on the bigger picture of safety, security, and care. This was our experience as a new foster family when we accepted our first child, just two weeks after our family’s approval. Other than the social worker who brought him to our home, FTF was the very first knock on our door delivering a lifesaving "parachute of goodies" for all of us in the home, and we are forever grateful! Our family is frequently asked about our journey and how one might help us or the foster community. That's such a tangible concept to imagine - of course, kids shouldn't have their things in garbage bags. But those ads always make us wonder "What if there were a healthy, familiar grown-up attached to that suitcase?" Isn't that what they really need? Someone consistent they can trust and who knows their story. ✅ Someone who knows what book they're on in the Wings of Fire series, ✅ who knows their favorite type of muffin (not blueberry, cuz mushy fruit=gross), ✅ someone who knows their favorite song ...someone who knows them, and will show up no matter what? 😃It’s almost here! Help us get kickstarted! ALL OF FEBRUARY we’re trying to raise AT LEAST 20k to get kick started. Feb 1st/Thursday morning at 9am (CST) you’ll see a campaign go up that will show our progress for our February Fundraising. You can give there! Big or small, every dollar counts! Here’s what we’re trying to get started with… >> Getting resources to our young adults who have aged out. Food, hygiene products, basic household needs, furniture, gas cards etc… >> Resources to foster families as needed. >> The Crown Project… access hair care/ braids/protective styles for the black community in foster care and young adults who have aged out (52% of our kids in foster care in our kick off county are African American, more needs to be done for people of color who have specific needs). Also providing things like bonnets for kids in foster care. >> Assistance with senior year things that are not covered by DCS... Like being able to get hair, nails and make up done for prom. >> Provide new shoes and clothes as needed. These are just a few things that we’re aiming to get kickstarted this year! Our ultimate goal is to have a building that’s serving as a place of help and community for kids, and young adults who are or have experienced the foster system, and the families and case workers who support them. Then we want to see this happen countrywide. We’ve got big dreams!!!! We can’t wait to see them happen!!! These look like big goals for just us. They are not able to thrive -academically, mentally, or relationally - when they’re simply trying to survive. The only way to heal trauma is through consistent, healthy relationships.
