For me, the European Union stands for peace, freedom, democracy and prosperity. These days, many of us may take these values for granted -- and yet, they are among the key achievements of the EU. On today’s Europe Day, we remember that not so long ago, Europe was divided into two halves by the Iron Curtain. The EU has changed that, providing stability and economic growth. For us at Erste Group Bank AG, the EU's eastward enlargement has laid the foundations for our success story and our path to becoming one of the leading banks in the region. Without the legal certainty and the stable regulatory and economic framework of the EU, investments in the region on this scale would have been unthinkable. The EU’s enlargement has given us the opportunity to support the region and its people in creating prosperity. As a EU citizen and an enthusiastic European, I -- like many of my colleagues -- look forward to casting my vote in the European Parliament elections, which will help shape the future direction of the EU. Because democracy in Europe is also very important to us at Erste Group, we have recently raised the EU flag in front of our headquarters as a clearly visible signal of our belief in the importance and promise of the European idea. A good start, Trade is the means, Peace is the goal. EEC to EU over ~ 70 years ~ now Brexit has undermined this progress and really impressive achievement; and the U.N. has been undermined by Russia & China as well as Israel through non recognition and failing to advocate within the system for so long (does not recognize the ICC and ICJ) - so much promise of the past 70 years has been undermined by right wing political figureheads including American republicans, it is essential to get the full EU back and to strengthen the development of the rule of law and international human rights through the U.N. EU and NATO.
→ The #EU was started to achieve lasting peace between members 𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗥𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗥𝗢𝗠𝗘 – 𝟭-𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 Sixty-seven years ago today, on 25 March 1957, the Treaty of Rome was signed by six European countries to form a remarkable new community to help sustain peace between them. The European Economic Community – later to be called the European Union – was started in the aftermath of the #SecondWorldWar for one purpose alone: to create lasting peace between its members. That was the passionate resolve of those who are regarded as the eleven founders of the European Union, including our own war leader, #WinstonChurchill. After all, Europe had a long and bloody history of resolving its differences through war, and indeed, the planet’s two world wars originated right here, on our continent. So, the EU was never just an economic agreement between nations. It was always also meant to be a social and political union of European nations not just to trade together, but to co-exist and co-operate in harmony and peace on many levels as a community of nations. The goal, in the founding document of the European Union called the Treaty of Rome, was to achieve ‘ever closer union among the peoples of Europe’. The six founding nations of the new European Community were France, Italy, West Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg. This was a remarkable achievement, considering that these countries only a few years previously had been fighting in a most terrible war Churchill made his last speech about Europe at London’s Central Hall, Westminster in July 1957; some four months after the signing of the Treaty of Rome. He said then: "My message to Europe today is the same as it was ten years ago - unite. Europe's security and prosperity lie in unity." Maybe this is the point that many Brexiters simply don’t get. Here in Britain, we don’t seem to understand the founding purpose of the European Union – and on the rest of the continent, they don’t understand why we don’t understand. The European Union isn't just about economics and trade, and never was. It’s about peace, and a community of nations of our continent working together for the benefit and protection of its citizens. We have now rebuffed our allies in Europe, telling them by our actions and words that the precious, remarkable, and successful EU project to find peace and security isn't as important to us as it is to them.
