Origin Materials has successfully turned wood residues into sustainable intermediates at their Origin 1 facility located at the Bio-Industrial Park Sarnia in Sarnia-Lambton. The facility is an anchor of the Sarnia-Lambton Hybrid Chemistry, and successfully shows how the traditional non-renewable hydrocarbon value chain can be integrated with bio-based, renewable, waste, or circular economy based concepts to power sustainable innovation, investment, and development. #sarnialambton #originmaterials #chemistry As the world moves towards more sustainable inputs/feedstocks/processes and products, is there enough buy in from consumers and support from government? I hope that the answer is yes and I believe that not only consumers but government as well will put their money where their mouth is and continue to support companies traditional or new to embrace sustainability as not only a business best practice but as a the right thing to do for everything.

I am pleased to announce that our newest paper in the journal of #Separations is now published online (@MDPIOpenAccess). https://lnkd.in/gwzSDb2X The article contributes to the #sustainable economy concept via resource conservation to minimize the environmental and health risks of solid and liquid waste effluents. This sustainable economy concept is based on developing an Al-based #coagulant (PACl) from alumina waste and its utilization for #petroleum #wastewater #treatment. Recycling aluminum waste reduces the need for traditional aluminum production from bauxite, along with the environmental risks associated with #landfills and the #incineration of #alumina #wastes. Applying PACl in #oilfield wastewater treatment may help with environmental protection, which is particularly important in oilfield operations. As #sustainability #practices and #environmental responsibility become increasingly crucial in the oil industry, adopting a cost-effective coagulant like PACl from recycled alumina sources may also align with evolving #market and #industry trends.

Ok all my food-rescue science friends, what are your thoughts on pyrolysis and biochar in the food-rescue hierarchy? This example of a use for the huge volume of coffee-grounds produced worldwide, coupled with the natural-resource thirsty need for concrete... an interesting concept. I know building waste goes into the making of concrete in a similar way, and it would be better to use building materials more carefully. Often people think biobased is old-fashioned and just back in time. But it is not. Meet modern bamboo in the industrial, modern world. It's even used to make transparant glass in buildings... Why? Because it is an abundant material you can harvest much more often than wood or other resources. Worldwide, 2.5 billion people are dependent on bamboo for economic growth, buildings, furniture, clothing, food, energy, and more. There are at least 1,500 documented use cases. Have you ever thought about how we can achieve more sustainable and environmentally friendly asphalt pavements? Given the non-renewable nature and increasing consumption of bitumen, this issue has become a serious challenge for infrastructure development, especially in the construction and maintenance of asphalt pavements. To address this problem, we need sustainable strategies. To this end, extensive efforts have been made to enhance the resilience, sustainability, and circularity of asphalt pavements. One of the most promising of these efforts is the use of bio-based materials. Utilizing bio-based materials has emerged as an effective approach to creating green pavements. Wood-based oils, waste cooking oils, and manure-based bio-bitumen have been selected as subjects of study. Research shows that current bio-based oils are more suitable as additives such as softeners, rejuvenators, or modifiers rather than as direct replacements for bitumen. One of the promising applications of bio-based oils is as rejuvenators, which can potentially also serve as antioxidants. Additionally, combining polymers with bio-oils is another effective method to improve the performance of bio-bitumen. However, great care must be taken in the production of bio-bitumen, as material compatibility can affect performance and must be carefully addressed. Embracing these innovative approaches can be a significant step toward creating greener and more sustainable pavements. #greenpavement #labratory #phdapplicant #asphalt
