So the spoiled brat undocked and is returning in disgrace; stranding its crew on the ISS until SpaceX brings them home on Crew Dragon 'Freedom' next Feb. I ridiculed Starliner to the faces of its engineers at a UArizona career fair years ago, and I despise it more today. Speaking of Crew Dragon: they are 12/12 on successful crewed round trips; with 'Endeavor' currently docked to the ISS, and three more trips in as many capsules planned for this year (including Crew-9 departing later this month aboard the aforementioned 'Freedom'). However don't cry for Starliner and Boeing, my fellow American LI users: our tax dollars will continue to be *endlessly* sunk into making it work (I'm not exaggerating, BTW: go research how Starliner is being financed). And at least Boeing does excellently by comparison with its DEI and ESG initiatives... at least until Robby Starbuck pays his visit. 😎 #marsManGood

🚀 Career Mapping with Merck 🚀 This week, we had the privilege of collaborating with Merck for an enriching session on Career Mapping, an essential step in our ongoing journey with FourBlock's Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Veteran Career Readiness Program. Merck not only hosted but also shared invaluable insights into the nuanced process of career planning, helping veterans understand how to strategically map out their careers, from identifying target companies to setting long-term professional goals. The session covered a range of critical topics including how to start your career planning process, how to build professional relationships, and understanding company culture. I personally found this was one of the most challenging parts of making the transition from the military to the private sector. Military career paths are typically very well defined: You know what the next rank is and what to do to get promoted. In the Navy, we literally called it the "golden path" because we knew exactly what role we should do next to get promoted. Civilian careers? Well, not so much. There are incredibly diverse ways to get to where you want to be – or where you think you want to be – in five or ten years. Everything is changing so quickly these days, there are jobs you might want to do that don't even exist yet! This is really exciting, but it can also be intimidating or downright scary for people who haven't taken the time to think about what they really want to do. Often employers tell us they struggle to find young people to fill their roles. And in 2023 only 13% of young people told us that they felt confident that they could find a good job where they live. It will be interesting to see how this figure has changed as we analyse this years #YouthVoiceCensus We talk to lots of employers about this disconnect. Sometimes it is down to how cluttered the job market is, perceptions of the role/company or long held stereotypes, the role description and candidate expectations and many other factors. We are now of course facing rising economic inactivity challenges and have NEET rates at the highest levels in more than a decade, all contributing to workforce development challenges. Youth Employment UK is able to provide our Members with lots of different insight, strategies and case studies from other Members to help navigate these issues. Embarking on a new journey after a 20-year military career is no small feat. AllegiantVETS, my trusted Skillbridge provider, has been the guiding force in making this transition not only smooth but genuinely transformative. "Ignite your post-military career journey with energy and guidance," says AllegiantVETS, and they mean every word. Marcus Haney frequently states he is "always by your side." Through our partnership, I had the opportunity to attend career fairs, collaborate with other veteran organizations, build relationships among members, secure a mentor through American Corporate Partnership, and receive lifelong access to Coursera for both myself and my dependents. What stood out to me was the flexibility AllegiantVETS offered. I could manage my schedule, dedicating a minimum of 25 hours to professional development and 15 hours to other transition items each week. For me, this translated into willingly investing 80-100 hours a week in my transition journey. Honestly, I believe this should be the minimum standard for all transitioning military personnel. But it wasn't just about the numbers. Some weeks, I dialed back to the minimum 40 hours a week and I focused more on family, personal mental health, and emotions. AllegiantVETS understood that the transition process isn't one-size-fits-all. The flexibility to shift my focus as necessary significantly eased the complications that come with leaving a 20-year military career. Coming from a background where weeks often demanded 80-110 hours of my weekly time whether on and off-duty, transitioning to a structure where family time and personal time were separate from work time was challenging for me. AllegiantVETS became my ally, providing the support and resources I needed to navigate this profound shift. In their company, I found more than a Skillbridge provider; I found a dedicated crew and a community. Together, we navigated the transition, turning challenges into opportunities. AllegiantVETS not only understands the unique needs of veterans like me but actively empowers us to thrive in civilian life. I was able to expand my Project Management skills and explore other avenues like Data Analysis, Business Intelligence, Computer Programming, Supply Chain Management, and DevOps, to name only a few, to truly understand my post-military employment desires. Gratitude doesn't fully capture how thankful I am for the opportunity with AllegiantVETS. They were the compass guiding me toward a thriving tomorrow, and for that, I am truly grateful.
