This is Iulia Lucretia Holhos from Skymetrix, at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro on 1st March 🙌 🇹🇿   Iulia was inspired by her love of landscapes and hiking to take on this huge personal challenge, which included six days of trekking and camping to reach Africa’s highest point. Remarkably, she hadn’t done much camping before!   Here's how she reflects on the experience: “It was an unforgettable adventure! For me it was not just about the reaching the top but embracing the entire journey.   "The things I found most difficult were the altitude sickness, packing and unpacking your sleeping bag every morning and evening (surprisingly exhausting!), having to forgo showers and make best friends with wet wipes, and managing six days without coffee 😆   "But I learned such a lot too. If you’re taking on a similar challenge, here are my tips. (These are good lessons for life and business too!) ☑ Take time to prepare. Understanding what lies ahead can allow you to conserve your energy for when the inevitable obstacles arise. ☑ Just enjoy the ride. There are scenic views every single day — don’t overlook them by focusing on the discomfort. ☑ Find your own pace. Know yourself, your limits and your needs. What truly matters is that you are making progress, not the speed you’re going at. ☑ Stay focused, trust the team and yourself. It’s ok not to be fully prepared for all situations; look for your strengths and remember your successes. ☑ Remember your goal and break it down into small steps. For me, it was about taking one day at a time and not thinking about the entire climb. ☑ Accept and adapt to the new conditions, even when you are not totally comfortable — the oxygen level was at 72, so I could either panic or begin practising breathing exercises. ☑ Remember to appreciate what you have and stay humble. ☑ Share knowledge with others, communicate and collaborate. You achieve more together. ☑ Challenge yourself often to grow — you will discover powers you might not know you had. And finally… ☑ You can survive six days without a speciality coffee! ☕ (But I admit, I will try not to do this too often) " Well done Iulia! From climbing birthday parties in Berkeley when I was a kid, to my first outdoor climbs in Mexico a few years ago, rock climbing has always been a casual hobby for me. It’s a sport I absolutely love but that I only do every once in a while so I remain an eternal amateur. During my month in Brazil 🇧🇷 , I decided I would love to experience climbing here. But I also decided it was probably time to give myself a push and take my climbing to the next level. I have never done a multi-pitch climb (routes that are more than a single rope length in height), so that was clearly the next frontier. As I started making the plan for this climb, many reasons NOT to do it came up. Friends proposed much easier hike plans for that day, it was going to be during a heat wave, and I knew there would be a language barrier with the guide. I was a bit worried and scared but as I thought about it I realized that was mostly my comfort zone talking, not REAL reasons to not do it. There were many times during the all day experience that I thought "What in the world am I doing, this is too much for me." The rock and the landscape were completely different from anything I had climbed before, I had never climbed for so many hours straight, and I had never climbed receiving indications and instructions in Portuguese, a language I’m just starting to learn! Each outdoor adventure I do presents its own set of challenges, much like the shifts we encounter in our personal and professional lives. As I ascended this new peak, with every grip and foothold, I was reminded yet again of the importance of pushing past your comfort zone and adapting to change. This experience was a powerful reminder that you have to listen to your inner voice, but you also have to recognize when it’s driven by fear of the unknown, because sometimes what’s on the other side of that unknown is exactly what you need to grow.🌟 So, as I share this experience with you, I invite you to reflect on your own journey. Hiking the #IncaTrail to #MachuPicchu is an experience that teaches us valuable #lessonslearned. Reflecting on this amazing adventure, it's clear that the #resilience we develop on the trail can be applied in both our #personal and #professional lives. From 35+ miles of hiking to steep elevation changes and reaching a peak elevation of 13,766ft, this journey is not for the faint of heart. Here are some #lessons that we can all take away from this incredible journey: 🚶🏽♀️ Put one foot in front of the other. When things get tough, take a deep breath, reset, and keep moving forward. 🚫 - There are no shortcuts to success. Accomplishment comes from taking every step, no matter how difficult. 🏋🏽♀️ - Recognize the strength in others who help carry our weight. 💪🏽 - Everyone has their own set of strengths and weaknesses. Embrace your differences and use them to your advantage. 🆘 - It's okay to ask for help. We all need a little assistance on our journey. 🙏🏽 - Saying "thank you" goes a long way. We have summitted our first mountain of 2024 - before sunrise on the 1st of January! 👊 I’m sure it won’t be the last or the largest mountain - physically or metaphorically, that we climb this year, as a group, or as individuals, but it was a great way to start the year together. When I first thought of climbing a mountain before sunrise on New Years Day - and whether there was a blog in it - I had thought of it from a personal and individual perspective, but the first rule I applied to it, Stating and Sharing your goal, led inadvertently to recruiting others (my children) who also thought it a great idea! This really made it a far more enjoyable feat, and led to unexpected learnings that I would not have otherwise got by doing it alone (my 8 year old might be the alpinist in our family after all!). Setting a “deadline/timeframe”, with regards to goals is something I believe strongly in, and really creates a discipline around preparing for it, and while there wasn’t a great amount of detail in setting the first of January as the day to do it - it was a date and something I could plan around. Likewise with the mountain choice itself - apart from the fact that I have looked at it from my kitchen for years, and wondered what the summit looks like, there was no great reason to do it! Other lessons that were applied and learned: Don’t burn out too quickly! “Pole, Pole” - Swahili for slowly, is something I learned a long time ago when climbing Kilimanjaro, and was something I was able to share with my children on this climb, and applies to many goals in business. Setting out too quickly can be detrimental, despite the surge of adrenaline we often get, The path is long, and consistent application is usually the best way of achieving. Work as a team, while this was a relatively simple mountain, with most of the “team” between 8 and 12 years of age, we needed to share the load, determine who was the lead at different stages, who carried the most (no prizes for guessing correctly!). Celebration - it doesn’t need to be great! A cup of tea from a flask and a cookie time cookie really was sufficient, and the children are talking about the accomplishment of summiting rather than any “ incentive” for doing it, as they really set that as their reason. There’s always another mountain - Later that evening I was mountain biking with my eldest son from the peak of a local ski field when he noted how small “our” mountain suddenly looked when compared with some of the other peaks in the wider area, which we could now see from up on high. Achieving and conquering a “mountain” inevitably leads to wanting to target the next one! “You don’t have to be a hero to accomplish great things - - to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals.” Sir Ed Hillary Good luck to all of you with your own mountains that you will attempt, sometimes fail at the first attempt, but ultimately, I’m sure, conquer in 2024. #goals
