SPOTLIGHT ON SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM | Jimmie Hamilton pauses for a quick smile during his Osage Nation Summer Youth Employment job at Miears Tire Shop. Located in Hominy, Miears Tire Shop is one of many businesses hosting Osage summer youth workers who receive on-the-job training to support their professional development. Hamilton graduated from Hominy High School in 2023 and went on to complete certification in Electrical Trades at Central Tech in Drumright. Passionate and results-driven Social Service Assistant with extensive experience in residential and social services, especially within the Job Corps environment. Proven ability to provide support, and guidance.
I know some staff members are having some trouble with respecting students on center at Clearfield Job Corps so I wrote a topic and hopefully you can learn the skill I'm reaching out to shed light on a crucial aspect of professional conduct within educational institutions, specifically focusing on the importance of staff respecting students at Clearfield Job Corps Center. At Clearfield Job Corps Center, we recognize that every student is unique, with individual strengths, challenges, and aspirations. As educators and mentors, it's imperative that we cultivate an environment of mutual respect and support, where students feel valued, heard, and empowered to achieve their goals. Respecting students involves more than just following policies and procedures; it's about fostering meaningful connections, actively listening to their perspectives, and treating each student with dignity and empathy. Whether it's providing academic guidance, offering career advice, or simply lending a compassionate ear, or even being able to speak nicely and not be disrespectful or spread rumors about students to other students, it’s unprofessional and the interactions as a staff member with students should always be characterized by respect and professionalism. Furthermore, respecting students means advocating for their rights, ensuring equitable access to opportunities, and addressing any concerns or grievances with sensitivity and fairness. By upholding these principles, you are not only enhancing the student experience but also contributing to a positive and inclusive learning environment for all. As members of the Clearfield Job Corps community, let's reaffirm our commitment to respecting students and supporting them on their journey to success. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of the students and empower them to thrive in both their academic and professional pursuits. Thank you for your dedication to student success and for joining in fostering a culture of respect and professionalism at Clearfield Job Corps Center. #clearfieldjobcorpscenter #jobcorps #professionalism #respect #LeadByExample

Meet our first pre-conference presenter, Miranda James! Read more about their session through the link in our bio. Centering Student Learning in Campus Jobs This session is a case study of how the Multicultural Center (MCC) at Clackamas Community College is hiring, onboarding, and offboarding student employees differently. Whether you have student workers with very specific job responsibilities, or more ambiguous job responsibilities, this session is for you! In summer 2023 I wanted to change up how I recruited and hired student employees, and find ways for more buy-in from the students and their work. After re-centering the MCC’s mission statement, I created a process for hiring, onboarding, and evaluating students that is mission driven and co-created with students. Specifically this session will cover: 1. How to identify actionable pieces of your department’s mission statement 2. Building individual position descriptions with students 3. Using that position description as their roadmap for work, that in turn becomes their evaluation.

Mutiple student winners of a statewide contest encouraging high school students to create public service announcements that discourage tobacco use through vaping were feted last week at Monday’s Michigan Association of Broadcasters Michigan Student Broadcast Awards Luncheon & Career Fair. Wendy Zdeb, MASSP Executive Director. "Many schools have consequences for students who are found to be vaping at school but we realize prevention is the best answer....Our hope is that this contest will grow and we will be able to share student-made PSA's statewide to help students as young as elementary school learn about the dangers of vaping. As administrators we recognize elevating student voice and helping peers to influence each other is a valuable tool in combating this epidemic." Another valuable tool is Soter Technologies' FlySense vaping detection devices, which notify school officials - in real time - when vaping (and/or bullying) is taking place in areas such as restrooms where recording devices are not an option due to privacy issues. ★ Derek Peterson ★ #novaping #vapinginschools #stopthevape

Is there anything better than spending the day with counselors? This week our team was in Denver with school counselor corps grantees talking ICAP, blurring counseling domains- social emotional, academic and career & exploring work based learning and other interventions Some of the things we heard: -How do we get to career advising when we have students not getting basic needs met? -How do our counselors connect better with CTE teams to get exposed to trends in the labor market? -How do we address barriers to accessing work based learning? -How do we know we’re reaching students that need in school career development the most? -How do we start career interventions earlier so that students see themselves in top jobs? And what are they already doing? -Bringing employers in as a partner in planning WBL -Connecting student interests with their academic and career goals -Bringing parents and families into the conversation

We are excited to announce the release of a pivotal report co-authored by All4Ed’s Rebeca Shackelford and Ed Trust’s Dr. Kristen Hengtgen, titled “A Vision for Equitable Pathways: Enhancing Support and Innovation in College and Career Counseling.” This report provides a comprehensive vision for creating seamless transitions for students from P-12 to higher education and careers. It highlights the importance of clear choices, accessible information, and dedicated support, especially for students from underfunded districts. By addressing systemic barriers and advocating for pathways counselors in every high school, we can build a brighter future for all students. “Thank you so much for delivering the amazing year 11 assembly talk at St Cenydd today, I’m sure the students benefited from the information you gave out” - Michele Govier from Careers Wales Our Social Value Manager Paula Lunnon was invited to speak to over 300 pupils from year 11 and 10 over 2 separate school career assemblies. As an industry we know that we need to promote construction careers to attract the talent we need for the future, so getting these opportunities to speak directly to young people is essential. There are often misconceptions of what our industry can offer, and the different pathways individuals can take. By providing this information to students before they leave school and choose their career paths can encourage young people to consider our sector as a very viable and long-term option. #CareersinConstruction #BuildingTheFuture #SocialValue #LoveConstruction
