In 2022, the federal government reported that, in samples seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration, average levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC—the psychoactive compound in weed that makes you feel high—had more than tripled compared with 25 years earlier, from 5 to 16 percent. That may understate how strong weed has gotten. Walk into any dispensary in the country, legal or not, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a single product advertising such a low THC level. Most strains claim to be at least 20 to 30 percent THC by weight; concentrated weed products designed for vaping can be labeled as up to 90 percent. For the average weed smoker who wants to take a few hits without getting absolutely blitzed, this is frustrating. For some, it can be dangerous. In the past few years, reports have swelled of people, especially teens, experiencing short- and long-term “marijuana-induced psychosis,” with consequences including hospitalizations for chronic vomiting and auditory hallucinations of talking birds. Multiple studies have drawn a link between heavy use of high-potency marijuana, in particular, and the development of psychological disorders, including schizophrenia, although a causal connection hasn’t been proved. #marijuana #schizophrenia

Data from America's Poison Centers shows skyrocketing calls concerning children ages 0 -12 who have ingested marijuana edibles. These products are often sold in colorful packaging, made to look & taste like candies, cookies, and other snacks, which attract children. Keep in mind that one dose of edibles—one gummy or cookie, for example—contains on average 10 to 30 mg of THC, the psychoactive ingredient. Then consider that the average THC level of marijuana flower in the 1970's was under 5%. Children—and adults—can accidentally ingest dangerously high levels of THC at one sitting. It's the wild west out there in the commercialized marijuana landscape. There is money to be made before laws catch up with the harms. States considering recreational marijuana should have strict packaging guidelines in place beforehand. Removing Cannabis-Marijuana from the Drug Schedules is the only logical next step in the federal process. Hemp-Cannabis and all of its Cannabinoids have been removed from the Controlled Substances Act including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), under 1 percent=<.0.3%, which naturally occurs in the plant. Contrary to recent critical articles, advocates and growers understand that just like the alcohol and tobacco industries there are levels of potency. In the Cannabis world as (0.3% Delta-9 THC) Strains are allowed in interstate commerce and are now being limited to 21+ the product lines will continue to expand to cater to all of the particulars each person prefers. For the naysayers and critics: do you want to continue to allow unregulated markets (untested product on the streets) where our high school students have easier access than responsible adults? It's a no brainer in my book and should be in yours as well.

Follow me or send me a connection request, Keith King. The potency of marijuana has drastically increased in recent years, leading to new challenges for users across various experience levels. With THC levels in marijuana products now significantly higher than in the past, casual users are finding that even a few hits can trigger anxiety, paranoia, or overwhelming highs. Strains that once had THC levels around 5% in the 1990s now commonly exceed 20% or 30%, with some products reaching as high as 90%. This shift has contributed to a rise in marijuana-induced psychosis and concerns over its impact on mental health, especially among teens. The legalization movement has created an industry catering largely to heavy users, who drive demand for more potent products. Market forces favor high-THC strains, and smaller producers focusing on milder options struggle to compete in an industry dominated by large, multistate operators. Limited government regulation has also left many marijuana products unregulated, contributing to a lack of transparency about potency and safety. A potential solution lies in rescheduling or fully descheduling marijuana at the federal level, allowing for standardized regulations and clearer labeling. While legalization has made weed more accessible, it has also made it more difficult for many users to consume in moderation, leading to a growing debate over how to balance access with consumer safety.

As the Drug Enforcement Administration considers reclassifying cannabis to a less dangerous status, many in our communities are left wondering: “What does safe use look like?” As health communicators, it’s our job to answer this question. Our research has found that adults don't want their marijuana use to become “unhealthy,” but they don't know how to quantify or describe what overuse looks like. To educate priority populations about the complicated landscape of non-medical marijuana use, Prevention First Inc. worked with us at Rescue Agency to develop the commercial Canna-Vision, which provides our audience with everyday markers that indicate problematic overuse. 🚨 The Hidden Dangers of Contaminated Marijuana The legalization of marijuana has led to a surge in its use, but are we overlooking critical safety concerns? Contaminated marijuana, laced with arsenic, lead, or mold, is causing severe illnesses nationwide. Studies show that marijuana users have elevated levels of heavy metals in their bloodstream, risking fungal infections and other serious health issues. Federal health authorities have received reports of poisonings and harmful side effects. Even more concerning, there's a link between marijuana use in youth and the onset of schizophrenia and other psychoses later in life. The lack of national guidelines for testing potency or contaminants adds to the complexity. Join us in advocating for standardized guidelines, enhanced federal oversight, and increased testing to ensure the safety of cannabis products. It's time to address these critical issues for the well-being of all. https://lnkd.in/ejpvcUxu #CannabisSafety #PublicHealth #ContaminatedMarijuana

It's a bird! 🐦 It's a plane! ✈️ Oh wait it's our Friday Fact of the Week! 📊 Controversy Alert: Three marijuana companies advertise products with over 100% THC potency, defying scientific limits and raising concerns about industry regulation. #MarijuanaCrisis For instance: - Green Lady Marijuana in Olympia, Washington, listed a "Tasty Terps Ring Popz" vape at an alarming 8,710% THC potency. In a phone call, they confirmed it was a typo, clarifying that the actual THC content is 85.9%. - Harvest of Chula Vista, operating as Wellgreens Dispensary in California, showcased a "Jeeter - Bubba Gum" cartridge at 914.43% potency. Again, this was stated to be a typographical error, with the actual potency being 94% THC. - MedMen in Downtown Los Angeles had a "Blue Burst" cartridge listed at 185.97% THC. Upon inquiry, they admitted the impossibility of such potency, confirming the actual THC level to be 90%. The real concern in this scenario lies not just in misinformation but in the ability of stores to advertise and sell such high-potency products at all. Letting this industry loose will never be a win for public health, communities, or individuals.
