🌳🔥 Climate change, land-use, and population shifts are altering fire regimes worldwide. Increased drought 🏜️, high temps 🥵, and strong winds 🌬️ are making fire seasons hotter, drier, and longer. To address climate-related security risks and help fight forest fires in protected areas in South-Eastern Europe, we equipped park management authorities with fire suppression equipment.🧯👩🚒 👉 https://bit.ly/3Lq44GX

Being able to respond effectively and efficiently to emergencies, such as flooding or wildfires, is crucial for protecting lives, infrastructure, and the environment. With a warming climate and the prediction of more frequent and severe drought events - wildfires are likely to become a more frequent occurrence and have the potential to cause significant damage as well as pose a threat to life. This is how location data is supporting local resilience training to help manage wildlife response plans and keep people safe: https://ow.ly/ygst50Sh6hN #SeeABetterPlace

Interesting stats from SEPA Last week the Grangemouth Flood Protection Scheme (GFPS) project team completed a series of in-person engagement events allowing us to talk with over 300 local residents and businesses. Our online ‘virtual exhibition’ version has also been popular with nearly 400 visits during its first week. It has been great to hear from so many people in our local community who are aware of the current flood risk and concerned about the impacts of more frequent flooding events. This week I have meetings with both the Scottish Government and the Just Transition Commission when I will (again) be stressing the importance of all partners working in collaboration to fully fund construction of the largest flood protection scheme in Scotland (£450m-£672m). GFPS is estimated to bring £2.4 BILLION of economic benefit from avoiding flood damages (BCR4.3) and is a key enabler to many national and local policies including NPF4, Forth Green Freeport and Falkirk Growth Deal. A total of 28km (17miles) of defences are proposed to provide protection to the local community (4000 properties) and to critical national infrastructure (port and petro-chemical complex). The challenges of delivering infrastructure projects on this scale are substantial - but the social, economic and environmental devastation that could result from a single flood event in the Grangemouth area are even greater. #grangemouthfps
This autumn and winter has seen Scotland experience several extreme weather events. Between 1 September 2023 and 16 February 2024 we issued over 700 Alerts and Warnings. Climate change is having a huge impact on many areas in Scotland, with our Flood Warning Unit Manager, Pascal Lardet, encouraging 'those who aren’t signed up to our free Floodline service should take action now'. You can read more about the record number of Alerts and Warnings issued this winter in our latest media releases here - https://lnkd.in/e_yCSt3Z

While it's tempting to view forests primarily for their carbon sequestration, this perspective is limiting. Forests are essential for clean air, clean water, and the biodiversity that provides us with everything from medicines to that cherished morning coffee. To truly protect our planet, we need a holistic approach that values all the benefits forests provide. This means halting and reversing forest loss, safeguarding the rights of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-Descendants, Local Communities, Peasants, and Fishers who are the true guardians of nature. It also requires just and equitable financing mechanisms that recognize and value non-carbon benefits equally, ensuring that the rights of vulnerable groups are at the forefront of all climate actions. 🌍✨ #ClimateJustice #ForestProtection #IndigenousRights #SustainableFuture #BeyondCarbon
#Forests do more for the climate than store and sequester carbon. 🌳 🌴 For example, they: ✅ regulate rainfall ✅ provide cooling benefits ✅ protect coastal areas ✅ provide forest products for local communities facing climatic threats via FAO

Deadly wildfires in Chile point to a trend of ever more intense and frequent forest and rural fires, fueled by the climate crisis 🔥📈. Rising temperatures and El Niño phenomenon are causing droughts and changes in rainfall patterns in Latin America that create the conditions for devastating fires. UN Environment Programme's Francesco Gaetani explains how early warning systems and collaboration between governments and communities are crucial to fire prevention, preparedness, and response. #Climate #EarlyWarningsForAll

UN Climate Change Human actions and processes are behind the rapid deterioration of the planet. Also, Human actions and processes can be overturned producing corrective actions. Our environmental impact is evident and Chile’s situation is indeed concerning. Sadly it repeats itself in every place on the planet. Warm and dry weather has prompted Alberta’s early start fires in Canada, and several massive wildfires continue to burn in the Prince George’s region. The challenge is to assess and prioritize policies that will drive down emissions at the required speed. In the meantime, #Aviation has the power in its hands to address climate change with 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 and the industry is contributing with components such as 𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 https://lnkd.in/gJmSuXN a water weight management controller that allows strategic adjustments to current operational procedures such as water weight and data utilization reducing CO2 emissions and fuel burn. It is time for every field to contribute… the clock is ticking! #wildfires #sustainability #aviation #innovation #waterweight #together

Forests do play a major role in keeping the whole ecosystem and its services healthy. It provides for all the needs for not just the wildlife but also for humans. However, it's we the humans who don't understand or appreciate what the forests do for us or the planet for that matter. Especially the way developmental things have been going on in India over the past decade or so. How I wish that leadership in India, corporate or political could understand the importance of these forests instead of just for just looking at cutting through the forests across in the name of development. Also, some of the policies that have been framed or amended are totally detrimental to our forests and the livelihoods that depend on it. I read a report sometime in early 2023 which talked about an increase in forest cover from 2011 to 2021.. I'd say, do an assessment now and you would see how much forest cover has been lost in the last 3 years. Also, with all the cutting of trees and the green cover, some of our cities have become the most polluted cities of the world, and we are still talking about more & more development. I wish there could be an open forum for environmentalists where we could ask questions from the leadership of the country.

Food…Forests represent food and medicine for rural indigenous communities often impoverished by depletion of forests and trees. This is the most impactful effect trees have on developing nations…and also water which is another vital component of life for villagers. For us, we may view trees as carbon sinks but villagers have a totally different view.

Forest cover provides critical benefits, including carbon sequestration to combat climate change, soil protection and water cycle regulation. Economically, forests supply timber, non-timber products, and ecotourism opportunities. Socially, they support community livelihoods, provide resources for food and medicine, and offer recreational spaces. Forests also enhance biodiversity by serving as habitats for numerous species and contribute to cleaner air by filtering pollutants. Preserving and expanding forest cover is vital for environmental health, economic stability, and social well-being. #forestcover #climatechange
