Clara Zetkin, from the Social Democratic Party, proposed at the International Conference on Socialist Women, which took place in Copenhagen, 26-26 August 1910. Why 8 th march : First story : lacs of woman has started protest there right to vote/time of employment / wages in west world Second story : As stated in many sources, on March 8, 1857, the workers who struck were locked in the factory and lost their lives as a result of a sudden fire. A total of 129 people died, including most women in the fire. More than 10 thousand people attended the funeral of the workers. The exact date of the 3rd International Women’s Conference in 1921 was set as 8 March. At the same time, the name of the day was changed to “International Women’s Day” from “woman’s day” The colours associated with International Women's Day - purple, green, and white - carry profound symbolic meanings. Purple represents justice and dignity, green signifies hope, and white, despite being a subject of debate, symbolizes purity. International Women's Day celebrates the achievements of women and pushes for a world with equal opportunities. While I may not have personally faced blatant gender inequality, perhaps due to a more progressive environment, I believe it's still a crucial conversation. Currently, I work at Sealine Shipping Company, where a refreshing sense of unity prevails. Here, colleagues are simply that – colleagues. Ideas are valued based on merit, not gender. This experience strengthens my belief in a future where equality is not just an aspiration, but a reality. However, International Women's Day serves as a crucial reminder that this positive experience isn't universal. Many women still face challenges based on gender. This day encourages us to acknowledge these issues and work towards a future where all women, regardless of background, can thrive in their chosen fields. We’ll celebrate when we get there On the 49th official UN International Women’s Day, we would like to remind the world that although this is a day to recognise the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, it is not a day to celebrate. Yet. At Stena Line, we believe that all our people should have the same rights and opportunities to thrive. We also know that our company – like all organisations – has everything to gain from having a diverse workforce in which everyone is treated with equal respect and dignity. Greater diversity brings more perspectives, experiences, skills, and business to the table and it helps us better understand our customers and their needs. But gender equality is not a competition that anyone can win by just being slightly better than others. It’s a fundamental human right and should be respected and upheld by everyone in society. And we’re not there yet. Not as the world at large and not as a company in this industry. We operate in a historically male-dominated field. Even today, just over two percent of the global seafarer workforce is represented by women (source: International Maritime Organization) and we struggle to find women to fill some of our positions. But that’s a struggle we will pursue until the day we’ve broken the biases and are living in a world in which gender is not even an issue in our industry. We will keep collaborating with organisations to open new doors and we will keep launching initiatives and internal training to smash the glass ceilings. And do you know what? International Women’s Day: Celebrating the First Fighter for Women’s Equality I Knew - My Mother As we mark International Women’s Day, I’m compelled to honor the first champion of women's equality I ever knew—my mother, Linda Roberta McClees. A formidable Scot-Irish-Galician fireball of love and intellect, she epitomized strength and advocacy, always looking out for others and pushing those around her to excel. Linda wasn’t just a mother; she was a movement. Her relentless drive and compassion set the stage for my understanding of equality and justice. In her world, there were no barriers too significant to overcome and no injustices too small to address. She lived with a fierce commitment to fairness, imbuing in me the values of resilience and empathy. Her legacy is a testament to the power of individual action in the collective struggle for women's rights. She proved that one need not be globally recognized to make an indelible impact on the fight for equality. It's the everyday heroes like Linda who weave the fabric of our progress. Today, I reflect on her contributions with immense pride and gratitude. Her spirit continues to inspire me and many others to advocate for change and champion the rights of women everywhere.
