In July 2024, First Nations Futures distributed $340,000 in unrestricted funding to First Nations community organisations, empowering them to drive self-determined futures and address community needs on their own terms. For many, this is the first time they’ve received unrestricted funding, giving them the flexibility to focus on what truly matters — supporting their people and delivering work where it’s needed most. This funding has opened doors for growth, innovation, and sustainability, helping these communities build stronger, more resilient futures. With just 0.5% of philanthropic dollars reaching First Nations-led organisations in Australia, First Nations Futures is tackling this imbalance head-on. By channelling resources directly to community-led initiatives, they are transforming how philanthropy fosters long-term, locally driven impact.

Excerpt from this week’s PSA, Power, Equity and Impact, exploring how philanthropy can address the root causes of inequity and shift power to communities. “Many forward-thinking philanthropic organizations are now taking the time to dive deep into historical data and current realities within their focus areas. This process often reveals stark imbalances in support for marginalized groups or chronically underfunded issues. By acknowledging these disparities, philanthropists can set the stage for a new approach that goes beyond merely distributing grants to addressing fundamental inequities.” The future of philanthropy depends on how courageously we embrace its evolving role from funder to systemic change agent. Billionaires are increasingly championing philanthropy. Sam Altman, OpenAI's head, joins their rank by signing the Giving Pledge. A bold initiative that arose in 2010, the brainchild of Warren Buffet and Bill, and Melinda French Gates.🌍🤝 This initiative nudges the world's wealthiest to donate a minimum of half their riches towards worthy causes during their lifetime or in their wills. It underscores the power of endowments, encouraging the ultra-rich to leave a meaningful legacy for global communities. A noteworthy addition to this noble movement is French Gates, who demonstrates immense commitment to advancing women's rights globally with her pledge to donate a staggering $1 billion by 2026 through Pivotal Ventures.🌐🎗️ So, amidst this surge of billionaires' philanthropy - will more of the world’s moguls step forward? And dare we surmise what impact a global philanthropic movement of this scale might have on some of our most pressing issues? #Philanthropy #GivingPledge https://lnkd.in/evjJt3sj

I have been struck by the recent shifts of major philanthropies who were/are anchors of the #humanrights funding ecosystem. From Open Society Foundations new strategic direction to the news of the sunsetting of Wellspring Philanthropic Fund - both allies, peer funders and past funders of various organizations I have helped lead - I grow increasingly concerned about the consequences of what I perceive to be happening: a gradual dissolution, depriortization and shift away from #humanrights language and framing. To be clear: I fully believe foundations, just like any organizations, should pursue the mission and strategies that they feel compelled to win. But still, on the issue of #humanrights, this all feels part of a worrying trend. I believe this is a critical time for deep reflection and new strategy building for all those concerned. My hope is that what emerges is a deeper recogniton and commitment to #dignity, #equity and #rights as core to all the issues we hope to win, from #climatechange to #development. But I also worry we aren’t awake enough to the changing tides around us. What’s your take? #philanthropy #bizhumanrights #civilsociety

Philanthropy - straightforward and simple? Or slightly complicated? At Taranaki Foundation, our mission is to nurture thriving local philanthropy. Put simply, we believe that community philanthropy, whether through financial contributions, time, or resources, is about the collaborative efforts we engage in today to shape a brighter tomorrow, together. 📰 In this article, I take a moment to reflect on the art of balancing immediate needs with long-term impact. While we need to focus on the weather of the day, we must also consider the broader climate of the era. 🌏If you're Taranaki-based, or anyone across New Zealand interested in discussing how to leave a legacy, let's talk. #InspiringGiving #Legacy Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand
