Meet Rachael and Maria. Two strangers bonded by their experience of becoming sandwich generation caregivers at similar phases of life, as they cared for both their parents diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) while also navigating raising their own children. Rachael and Maria learned early on the importance of community, whether it be in-person or on social media, and found that navigating their caregiving journey became a bit simpler when they had each other to lean on, talk through the progression, and the emotions that come with it. 3wThank you for shedding light on this important topic, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Companies (U.S.). I cared for my grandmother when I was just 19 years old and in college. I went home every weekend to care for her and give my parents a break. She suffered for 7 years. Unfortunately, many years later, my father developed dementia. I was a single professional mother of young sons during this time and juggled my schedule to care for him. It was very difficult for my elderly mother and sister as well. We need deeper conversations regarding caregiver support along with the financial and emotional toll that occurs during such a crisis.
