As we step into February, it's not just the chill in the air that captivates us, but a profound tradition that warms our hearts and enlightens our minds. February marks Black History Month, a time dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating the significant contributions of Black individuals and communities in shaping our world. Black History Month, observed since 1976 in the United States, is a powerful reminder of our shared history and the enduring legacy of Black Americans and people of African descent. Its roots stretch back to 1915, the year the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) was established by the eminent Harvard-educated historian, Carter G. Woodson. Woodson's vision was clear and compelling: to bring to light the achievements and contributions of Black Americans, a narrative often overlooked in the pages of history. In 1926, this vision took a more structured form with the sponsorship of Negro History Week by the ASALH. This week, strategically chosen to coincide with the birthdates of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, was not just a commemoration but a vibrant call to action. It urged schools and communities across the United States to engage in activities, discussions, and lectures that would illuminate the richness of Black history. Over the decades, what began as a week-long observance blossomed into a month-long celebration, receiving national recognition in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. Today, Black History Month transcends borders, being celebrated in countries like Canada and the UK, albeit in different months. At CAVU, we recognize the immeasurable impact of BIPOC individuals in the realms of Agility and modern development. Throughout February, we are thrilled to honor and showcase our friends, alumni, and partners who have been instrumental in this journey. Their stories are not just tales of success; they are beacons of inspiration, symbols of resilience, and testimonies to the power of diversity in driving innovation and progress. Stay tuned each week as we highlight these remarkable journeys and achievements. Together, let's embrace this opportunity to learn, reflect, and be inspired. Let's celebrate Black History Month not just as a look back into the past but as a step forward into a future rich with diversity, inclusivity, and shared success. #BlackHistoryMonth #InnovationThroughDiversity #Agility #ModernDevelopment #CAVU

Black History Month Staff Highlight: ❓What is your heritage? My race is Black, and my heritage is like a savory gumbo (my mother's family from Louisiana) mixed with a dash of paella (my father's family from the Dominican Republic), a fusion of flavors and histories that weave together to create the tapestry of my identity. It embodies the resilience, creativity, and diversity of the Black experience, spanning continents and generations. ❓What does Black History Month mean to you? Black History Month, to me, is a time of reflection, celebration, and education. It's a dedicated moment to honor the profound contributions, struggles, and triumphs of Black people throughout history. It's a reminder of the resilience and strength that have shaped our past and continue to inspire our future. ❓What do you want people to take away from Black History Month this year? This year, I hope people take away a deeper understanding of the breadth and depth of Black history. I want them to recognize Black individuals' often-overlooked narratives and contributions in various fields, from art and literature to science, politics, and beyond. I want them to carry forward a commitment to amplifying Black voices, dismantling systemic injustices, and fostering a more inclusive society every day, not just during February and beyond this month. ❓How do you recognize/celebrate Black History Month? I celebrate Black History Month by engaging in meaningful conversations and uplifting Black voices and achievements through social media and community involvement. I also reflect on my own heritage and the stories passed down through my family, recognizing the interconnectedness of our personal histories with the broader narrative of Black excellence and resilience. As for the quote from Zora Neale Hurston, one powerful excerpt comes from her autobiography, "Dust Tracks on a Road": "There is no agony like bearing an untold story inside of you." This quote speaks to the importance of sharing our stories, our histories, and our experiences as Black individuals. It emphasizes the transformative power of storytelling in shaping our understanding of ourselves and our place in the world. By sharing our stories, we contribute to the ongoing narrative of Black history, ensuring that our voices are heard and our experiences are remembered for generations to come. #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM2024 #MoreThanJustAMonth
