This week it's been all about Deeptech Labs.
Tuesday afternoon saw the Demo Day at Jesus College, Cambridge, where it was Breakmas Week (yup, I checked, a real thing!).
After some mint tea and networking, the auditorium event, hosted by Miles Kirby, began with an intro from Cambridge Innovation Capital's Andrew Williamson, followed by a panel which added Marion Bernard, Christine Martin and Marina Santilli, discussing the recent publication of the 'Independent Review of University Spin-out Companies'.
There were then two sets of pitches. The first was from returning Deeptech alumni, Condense, Contilio, Medwise AI and Xapien, showing the great progress they've been making out in the wilds of the real world. The second set of pitches was from the most recent cohort: Barocal, Materials Nexus, Synthara AG, Wave Photonics and Monumo updating us on where they are at and what's coming next for them.
We wrapped up with more networking in the exhibition area, where we could chat more with the presenters and the other event attendees.

Getting and keeping the attention of both investors and potential customers, as these deeptech businesses take the time they need to come to market readiness and mainstream applications and usage, is essential. We had much chat about the whole area of "technology to human translation", which I talk about a lot, and how crucial this is in gaining credibility, awareness and traction.
If the quality of the pitches represent the quality of a typical Deeptech Labs cohort, then I can't wait to get my teeth stuck into helping the next season of fledgling businesses early next year. As ever, bringing my marketing mindset, which includes the tech to human, right from the outset...
