There are few corporate initiatives as important as creating diverse, equitable, and inclusive spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.     According to EY, Gen Z is six times more likely to identify as LGBTQ+ compared to Gen X, and with Gen Z making up 30% of the workforce by 2030, this underscores the growing necessity for inclusive policies in the workplace.    While we celebrate and uplift the progress that has been made over the past few decades, we simultaneously acknowledge that we as a society have a long way to go in ensuring that every workplace embraces diversity, promotes equity, and empowers all individuals.     Our work in this space inspires deep hope for what's to come. With the LGBTQ+ community making up approximately 8% of Australia's population, it doesn’t make sense that they represent only 1% of board seats in the ASX300. Watermark’s 2024 Board Diversity Index highlighted that publicly available reports show only 4 directors openly identifying as LGBTQ+ however research by the Australian Association of LGBTQ+ Board and Executive Inclusion (ALBEI) suggests there could be up to 20 LGBTQ+ directors in 2024. This is a small representation of the LGBTQ+ community within boardrooms. At Watermark we believe boardrooms and board members can have both diversity and meritocracy which encourages more business innovation, strengthens relationships with customers and broadens accountability. What is an LGBTQ+ ally? The aim of an ally, or advocate, is to step into the shoes of their LGBTQ+ colleagues, understand the challenges they face, and promote greater understanding of their needs and concerns. Many people within the construction industry are becoming allies to actively support LGBTQ+ colleagues, who may be feeling vulnerable or unable to truly be themselves at work. These people voluntarily choose to champion diversity and inclusion within construction, and lead initiatives to raise awareness of the issues members of the LGBTQ+ community experience on a daily basis. Allyship can lead to positive change and greater diversity and inclusion in the construction industry.
